This is the sort of nonsense the LLL should be protesting. Untold
billions of dollars that could otherwise be earmarked for education,
healthcare, child care programs, ect.... , are being wasted so that a
few people will become enormously wealthy, a few thousand will earn a
living, and the rest of the nation can be wooed for about a week
looking at pictures of rocks.

Space Shuttle Launch: Discovery May 15, Atlantis July 12
US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
has set the date of May 15, 2005 for the first space shuttle launch
since Columbia crashed in 2003.
The new shuttle, called Discovery, will be launched on May 15, while
Atlantis, which will be ready to attempt rescue almost immediately, in
case Discovery runs into problems, has a planned launched from Cape
Canaveral on July 12.

I love those bleeding hearts that criticize the space program, yet
gleefully suck up without so much as a word of thanks all of the technology
from our endeavors to get off this doomed planet. Technology that makes
their lives easier and better and in some cases is so significant that it
revolutionizes how they go about their daily lives.
One thing to remember is LBJ's "War on Poverty". What a miserable
failure. Billions were spent to no avail. The poor will be poor until
they change their attitudes. I work with people and meet new ones that
have brought themselves out of poverty and are now making 90+k per year.

Are you referring to the $300,000,000,000 spent on Iraq?
Or the $2,000,000,000,000 Bush wants to spend to eliminate Social
Security?

If he is spending government money then I suspect there is another
agenda besides his interest in science. :-)
I think he is more interested in the military aspects of NASA than
anything else.

Why would the Lawrence Livermore Lab protest government funding of
basic research?
Which few people are becoming enormously wealthy?

I do support the robot probes; they seem to give us more bang for the
buck. Don't get me wrong; I want to see humans in space, but I think
that the private companies are going to surpass the clumsy and
inefficient government efforts very quickly. Go, Space Ship One!
It's nice to think of child care programs, etc. but I'm afraid if we
don't invest in basic research and keep progressing in science we will
simply end up back in the dark ages with priests exhorting hungry
peasants to be charitible. We need to be able to deal with plague,
alternate power supplies, terrorists, pollution, global warming, etc.
We can't easily go back, and we can't stay status quo forever. We have
to keep learning. Space is part of it.
Education is simply investing in the infracstructure, and must be done
or everything falls apart. Math and science especially.

Quite opposite, space exploration should be a priority, killing people in
Iraq should be terminated together with the Chief demon!

My thoughts exactly. Besides, the space program has generated tons of
new technologies that are used in everyday life.
