Ditto. However...
Could somebody explain, in word of few syllables, to geographically
challenged people (i.e. not living in the US), the difference between the
platforms of the two major presidential candidates, please?
From abroad, it seems like Kerry is a not-so-lite "Bush-lite", trying to
out-Bush Bush himself (http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0824-15.htm).
Escalating US military involvement in Iraq (memories of LBJ), not
repudiating unilateral military action by the US and so on...
What's the diff' and why should anyone care?
Thanks in advance.

Bush took a thriving country with an economic surplus in the billions
and drove it into the mud with a deficit in the billions. He helped
corporations move jobs out of the country and caused a recession. He
took money from the middle class, gave it to the wealthy, and called
it a tax break. He started a war where none was necessary, against
the resolution Congress passed, wither because the other country's
leader had tried to kill his dad year ago, or because they were
producing too much oil and keeping the price down. (The Bush's are
oil people. So are the Cheney's.) And he is trying to destroy our
secular constitution/government and replace it with a Christian
fundamentalist one.
Against that who cares what Kerry would do. He couldn't possibly be
half as bad.

It's a well-rehearsed maxim in the US that a halfway-intelligent candidate who's
*not* up to no good can't campaign on exactly what he's thinking, because it comes out
sounding like an attack against stupid and crooked people, two groups without whose
marginal tolerance no candidate can succeed. Since you (quite reasonably, from a
non-USAian pov) raise foreign military adventures as a criterion for distinguishing the
likely behavior of the two prospective fingers on the button, Kerry's "I'm not that much
less macho than shrub" locutions should be understood to mean "it'll be a cold day in
hell before I do anything as defiantly stupid as committing the US's armed might, the
lives and well-being of its uniformed youth, and indeterminate tens of billions of dollars
annually, for an open-ended span of years, in a war so despised by our allies-in-chief
(that is to say, not paying overmuch attention to Bangla Desh and the like) that failing
to get them onboard costs the US the loss of all respect and cooperation in the UN,
to say nothing of creating recruiting opportunities Bin Laden usually only imagines
just before ejaculation, in his dreams." If it doesn't sound that way to you, that's
because the "Liberal" media wait in the tall grass for anyone who says what he means,
unambiguously, so they can pounce, feed ravenously, and stick their hands up the voters'
asses to make them dance to the new tune. Truth is, elections are driven by hormones
and slogans by about 5:1 over rational consideration of issues that matter outside of
football imagery fantasy.

Election? I hadn't noticed...been too busy reading about politicians! 8)
Still...I'm downloading 1200 or so posts a day and skinning it all down to
between 25 and 50 posts I'm willing to read, between the fundie trolls, the
political screaming, and all that. It used to be at least 100 posts. The
upside is...I've shot down 5 simulated Nazi BF-109's, destroyed 5 of their
airfields, two factories, a couple of Panzers, and a number of bridges.
Pretty neat, flying a P-38J Lightning with unlimited ammo and fuel :)

So are you saying that Jimmy Carter did a proper job of supervising
the Venezuelan election and honorably certified the result?
Kinda strange that 13 of your Senators have asked the UN to supervise
the coming US elections.
I wonder why...................
ah...of course the stolen 2000 election !!
Even stranger that all 13 of those Senators are from the party that
tried to steal the election in 2000. But like I say, it's OK with me
as long as they uphold the same high standards as Jimmy Peanut in the
recent Chavez election.
Still griping because the Bush coup failed eh ?
Who is that in the White House again?
Hey, is this an admittance of the 2000 election theft ?
Mmmmm, or is it you've not been following Venezuela politics the last
few years ?

Yep, been following right along. Chavez has been bankrupting his country
with extreme leftist policies and downright corruption and faced a
recall election. His regime was just about as democratic as that of
Nicaragua under the Sandinista, but much better at running a fraudulent
election.
The Usual Leftist Media have been steadfastly denying that any evidence
of fraud could be found, in spite of reports to the contrary from
opposition groups.

There's honest and there's dishonest politicians. One of these days I'll
write an essay about how to tell the difference. Until then, this essay
by Lincoln isn't entirely off the track:
http://www.stcl.edu/faculty_pages/faculty_folders/steiner/alh2004/Lincol
n.html
http://makeashorterlink.com/?Q37916A29
....There is a vague popular belief that lawyers are necessarily
dishonest. I say vague, because when we consider to what extent
confidence and honors are reposed in and conferred upon lawyers by the
people, it appears improbable that their impression of dishonesty is
very distinct and vivid. Yet the impression is common, almost universal.
Let no young man choosing the law for a calling for a moment yield to
the popular belief -- resolve to be honest at all events; and if in your
own judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest
without being a lawyer. Choose some other occupation rather than one in
the choosing of which you do, in advance, consent to be a knave.

Indeed. John Grisham is making a lot of money writing potboilers about
unethical lawyers like the above.
As to exorbitant fees, there's a current parody of justice going on in
the US wherein the lawyers take their % fee *before* taxes and then the
tax man takes *his* % from the *total* because the fees aren't
deductible, leaving the client in debt for big $$ after "winning" his
lawsuit.
But of course the part about honesty and public perception was what I
was originally referring to. We like to call all politicians liars and
theives but there must be some honest ones or there wouldn't be so many
getting honors for public service.

You guys worry me.
Can you not tell the difference between a party that is, usually, a lackluster
servant of ordinary people's interests (as opposed to corporate interests)
and one that is its implacable enemy?
And as for the party, so for the candidate.
Is there no difference (giving you the point arguendo, 'though I'd disagree)
between a business-as-usual Middleparty don't-change-too-much guy,
and a Crusading gawd-speaks-to-me-so-get-out-of-my-way-or-you're-fucked
fanatic, with little attention for policy, happy to beard his cabal of saboteurs
