In 1940, while preparing ground in the Térraba River delta region of
southwest Costa Rica, workers for the United Fruit Company unearthed
an archaeological enigma.
They found a number of stone spheres, ranging from a few centimetres
to more than two metres in diameter, the largest weighing 16 tonnes.
Most of the spheres are so smoothly rounded that surface
irregularities are invisible to the naked eye.
