Object: Split personalities
It is interesting to note that the far majority of people live their lives
based on split concepts of life and the hereafter.
The vast majority of people practice some form of religion and follow their
religious tenants in order to assure a happy after life in paradise.
At the same time the majority of people fight death by all means available
right up to their last breath, indicating a lack of confidence there is a
happy life in paradise after death. Even pious and religious fanatics use
all means at their disposal to avoid death. For example; the Rev. Willie
Graham and the Pope.
If they truly believed there is a happy life in heaven after death, they
would refuse medical treatments that extend life and delay death. In fact
they would hasten and welcome death in order to start enjoying this
wonderful life in paradise.
This would indicate that emotionally they embrace religion and an after life
but intellectually/realistically they believe there is no such thing as an
after life. They intellectually perceive there is no objective evidence of
this life after death - only that death is final and the end. But again,
emotionally they refuse to accept this emotionally frightening finality.

I think this is because as people age they become wiser. They are able to see
the foolishness that is belief in God and an afterlife and consequently try
to prolong their lives

I disagree with you.
People do become wiser as they get older and may in fact have less of a
belief in God. However, people of all ages, not just the old, fight like
hell to stay alive.
What explains the young, who supposedly still believe in God, fighting like
hell to stay alive.
