State denies grant for Mission San Miguel
Monika Tjia
A $1 million grant that the Friends of Mission San Miguel were counting on
to help fix the ailing mission was recently denied by the California
Culture and Historical Endowment, on the grounds of separation of church
and state.
But the mission is not giving up on trying to secure the grant, said John
Fowler, the project manager for the mission. Fowler is drafting a letter
appealing the decision by Diane Matsuda, the endowment’s executive
director.
Fowler said that the endowment’s decision was based on a recent advisory
opinion by the California Attorney General’s office.
Matsuda cited the state constitution, saying it prohibits the use of money
to aid sectarian purposes. Fowler said that the mission is more than just a
religious structure, citing its benefits to the community and schools.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

USAF LT. COL (Ret) Buffman (Glen P. Goffin) wrote
"You pilot always into an unknown future;
facts are your only clue. Get the facts!"
That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
