Hi Stoney:
I've been lurking recently and saw your post concerning your computer
problems. If you haven't solved this yet, I have some questions to ask.
1) Have you tried booting into safe mode? It's a pain to be in safe
mode, but if you can go in there and try to work on some of the programs
that cause the problem, it might help to determine what exactly is going
on.
2) Is there any pattern whatsoever to when the computer starts its
rebooting jag? Are you in the same program or performing the same set of
tasks?
It seems unlikely to me to be a heat problem primarily because CPUs and
Mother Boards are (supposed to be) designed so that they shut down
completely when overheated. It sounds more like a specific device (or
it's driver's) are at fault and kick in when performing a task or tasks
that involve that device. This could be true of either internal or
external devices, by the way.
You may have to try the old, slow (and painful) route of removing certain
cards or peripherals one at a time. Sound cards, printers, scanners,
modems, etc. could all be the culprit.
I hope I'm not stepping on toes to promote my own website, but I have a
Windows (and Mac) trouble-shooting site that may prove to be helpful.
It's a site where readers post their problems and either I post the
answer or other readers do. Sadly, there hasn't been near the traffic I
had hoped for as of yet, so you aren't going to find your answer there
yet. But if you post your problem, maybe someone reading it will have
some additional answers. If you're interested, you can go to
http://www.miles-pc.com and post your question. I'll reply with much the
same as I've already written and call for other readers to post their
suggestions.
