Strangely On-Topic |
So i was demonstrating "Tivo" for a friend, and just
selected a show on Russian UFOs to record for an
example.
No, it wasn't a totally random choice. UFOs are a
subject he's really big on.
Anyhow, so much (Much) later I'm sitting around,
bored silly, and I check what's on tv. Then I remember
the Tivo and decide to check out this Russian UFO
show before deleting it.
Turns out it wasn't the usual hype. It even went so far
as to imply that these UFOs could be accounted for by
sightings of secret Soviet military tests. No, not Russian
"Flying Disk," but mostly your standard missiles &
rockets.
But that's not the interesting part.
The really interesting (and on-topic) bit dealt with the
1908 Tunguska explosion. Why it was so interesting &
relevant was -- assuming it was the least bit accurate --
the native explanation of the event.
See, the locals (according to the show) decided that the
explosion was caused by their god, or one of their gods,
whatever the case may be. Their god was offended so he
decided to kill off every living thing in the region.
I'd say "Shades of the flood," but this is more like 8x10
color glossies.
Maybe I'm making more out of this than I should, but it
seemed to jive nicely with my approach towards history.
That is to say, people are still people. The secret of the
past is the present. Want to know what the ancients were
like? Well, look around.

Forget the name anthropologists have for it. Bertrand Russell mentioned
that -- want to know what the ancient Egyptians believed? Ask your maid
about her superstitions.
