Stuck in a meaning rut |
I think atheists in particular, with no pre-defined meaning/purpose,
have to thinking about what to do with their lives more carefully.
Currently I'm stuck in a rut... I am not doing much of anything with my
time and I don't know what to do.
Things I've enjoyed in the past: meditation, chess, web design, movies,
computer hardware, activism, digital photography, reading, television,
psychology, philosophy, Linux, ...
Any ideas? I'm stuck in a small town, so I can't even socialize to get
ideas (found out yesterday that the Go club in town had died).
Thank you.

Try learning to play a musical instrument. It's challenging and rewarding
for me. You may find it the same. Take lessons from the best teacher you can
find and afford.

I can understand what you're going through. Some things you consider
'meaningful' somehow no longer do. In my case, there's no hope. I'm a
dead dog where I am at and there's no escape for me. In your case. Maybe
the fact that you are an atheist - with a ton of talent and interests - can
snap
you out of your doldrums. We 'liberals' are getting our ***** handed to us by
the religious right. Perhaps becoming more of a 'militant' and producing
your
own blog or web site could get the old engine a cookin' again. (Attacking
the
religious right like a rabid dog can even be theraputic - and fun.) As for
'socializing,' that's a bit rough if you can't find like-minded people in
your
midst to bounce ideas off of. (I am *completely* alone out where I am. And
I fully realize how painful life can be without commonality with someone.)
The
old saying is true: No man is an island. Lonliness is like a cancer - and
can be
just as deadly. Now enough of those jolly thoughts. I'd suggest forming an
Atheist-Agnostic roundtable or something with the people in your area. Maybe
even purchase the 'Go' club and make it a place of interest - if that's at
all
possible. Just a few harmless thoughts.

There was a group once .... what did they call themselves? They claimed
they had a solution to this loneliness thing. The principle was to invent
an imaginary friend...
That's it! They were called Religious!! ;)

Gater, sorry I didn't get back to you reguarding your request for me to
answer to you the meaning of life or purpose.
Please see my other message to this thread. It follows along the same

There is no predefined meaning/purpose. It's up to you to decide on
one.

Except for 'activism,' everything in that list of yours is an activity,
a time filler. 'Activism' is the only one which implies a purpose
aimed at a lasting result.
Any ideas? I'm stuck in a small town, so I can't even socialize to get

You don't say what state (or country) you're in, so I can't be too
specific, but I'd suggest becoming a nudist (naturist) and then
graduating to nudist activism. We can always use one more! One with a
fresh outlook would be doubly useful.
You'd like the people, find plenty of (intellectual) stimulation, and
just might end up in better physical shape as well.
And, of course, the challenges are endless when one gets into
taboo-breaking civil liberties activism.

I'm not a troll. I've been an atheist for 11 years. My current "meaning
crisis" I think happened because of a terrible depression I had this
winter. I'm no longer depressed... not sleeping 15 hours at a time,
etc. ...but I feel kinda wandering/empty right now.

Just know that anything you do in your life that is without the will of
God will always have that empty feeling to it.
There is a better way! You only need to open your mind and heart to an
understanding of why God made Heaven and Earth for our sake.
Ask yourself "What do you really have to lose?"
There IS purpose in our being here.
Let me try to LIGHTLY go over some of this meaning of life stuff...
* We are able to be created.
* There is more than one entity with the ability to create us.
* The universes are many.
* Time is infinite.
* Something or someone managed to create you once.
* Odds are it will happen again. Why shouldn't it?
And in that, there is our problem.
We are born into a state of being a stranger to God. Born into sin.
We are fortunate though to have been born into this universe created by
a God that cares for us out of love. He is offering us a way to escape
that process of hopping from one existance to another for all eternity.
He has offered a path to his Paradise through the Word of God, Jesus Christ.
The athiests say, that they are nothing but the occurences of mental
states of THIS instance. And once this instance dies, so do they,
forever. This is incorrect. For, it is just as unlikely that they
would be in this instance, this time, as any other. Yet here they find
themselves. In a like manner, they shall find themselves in another
instance also, yet with no memory of the previous. Just as unlikely
they found themselves in this instance.
Give that to deep thought.

Housekeeping. You know those shoeboxes full of snapshots? Organize
them or scan them. Go through those stacks of magazines and articles and
throw out everything but the most precious. Your garage/ basement/
attic/ shed needs to be cleaned out. Open your computer and dust it.
Paint a room. Clean windows, mirrors, and monitor screens. Adjust and
tighten everything that has screws or bolts. Check your car's fluids/
tire pressure/ filters/ hoses/ lights/ belts. Vacuum and wash your car.
Go through closets and drawers and take any clothes you don't wear any
more to a charity.
When you're finished with all that you'll be delighted to plop your
***** down and meditate on philosophy a while.

Heh. Thanks for trying to help, but I am a OCD crazy neat freak. I have
very little to organize, and what I do have is organized every which

The only meaning/purpose atheists can possibly admit to is procreation;
continuation of the species. When we can't do that on an active level,
the next closest thing is a fairly close approximation, which depends
on one's available resources.
Gee, I hope that was tactful.

My first suggestion would be to get back into Linux, but everyone's
experiences are different. At least for me, trying to do something as
simple as download and install a program turns into a week long parade
of tears and anguish.
Are you relatively close to any major city center? Even if you can get
into a big town once a week, studying a self-reliant martial art like
Wing Tsun or Tai Chi can offer you a lot. You can practice on your own,
gain coordination/flexibility/fitness, and eventually you may be in a
position where you can start teaching or practicing with others in your
town.
