Object: Suggestions for Darwin Day Party? Please Help
Two local non-profit groups I belong to plan on having a free,
public Darwin Day birthday bash on February 12th to celebrate his
triumphant scientific achievement. The target audience is all
adults at least on the college level. We're trying to come up with ideas
about suitable events we can put on over the space of about 3-4 hours.
We've already recruited some biology and anthropology professors to talk
a little about evolution, philosophy of science, etc. We also plan on
showing video clips from a few documentaries on evolution and things like
that. I'd like to get constructive suggestions from you all about other
creative things we might do at the celebration (no sarcastic
or hostile suggestions please:)).

In particular, I'm interested in knowing the names of specific VHS or DVD
titles that might be useful to us. For example, I've checked out
attenborough's "Origin of Species: An illustrated guide", as well as
"Inherit the Wind" and may use a small sample from a Duckman comic on
"Eggvolution" or Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life". What other movies
contain interesting or fun stuff about evolution which we might be able
to work into a presentation?
Also, what kind of music is there about evolution and Darwin and such?
Does anyone have their own favorites, and if so, what are they?
Here are some other things we are thinking about:
We are thinking of cooking up a cake shaped roughly like the
famous darwin fish. We may also serve fish shaped cookies.
What other food ideas might be cool? Maybe jello or punch related?

We might try to get a lifesized cardboard cutout of Darwin's
likeness as a prop.

For advertising were thinking of doing things like sidewalk
chalking around campus, distributing flyers, using free announcements on
public radio, etc. We thought we might use the the line "Got Darwin?"
and any other short catchy slogans. Any suggestions here would be
appreciated. We do already know about the DarwinDay.org and we will be
availing ourselves of the many resources available there.
Thanks for any help you can provide us. We will be sure to let
folks know how the event went.

How about one of those Freezes, The big Bang (or whatever its called now)
up till the present day.
But get people to Guess where on it you should mark, when say:
(not in correct order!)
1. Solar system formed.
1a.Earth cooled.
2. Life began.
3. First Cells
4. First Creatures
5. Dinosaurs Extinct
6. First Mammals
7. Apes
8. Hominoids
9. Homo saps!
10. Graves
11. Wall Painting
12. Fire
13 Agriculture
14 Writing
15 Mumbo Jumbo
A kind of Quiz. Also helps College types to get their heads around these
Big Numbers and what they actually mean.

Yes, that would be good. We were thinking about some kind of
questionaire.

Get a really long roll of paper or string. Mark it out for the events
listed. Unroll it to drum rolls and commentary, with someone taking the
origin event away along a field - "Any minute now we will get to the
solar system... just wait... I'm sure it's here somewhere... Oops, there
it is! Lots of meteors now.... more meteors... Hey! There's life. Right.
Things will get exciting now, we have bacteria! [3 minute pause] more
bacteria [pause] ooh! multicellular life!" and so on.
Then in the last few cm really quickly read out - or have people read
out for you
"FishMammalsDinosaursBirdsApesHominidsFireHumansPyramidsMoonshot... and
here we are now!"
Or do a "Powers of Ten" series, with each power from 10 billion years +-
shown as a sequence.

There is more than a passing resemblance, isn't there :)? The
funny thing is that George claims to literally believe in Genesis. All
the boy has to do is look in the fricken mirror to see that he's related
to chimpanzees!

That's why I have taken to calling him the Chimpanzee-in-Chief (I guess that
makes Laura Bush "Chiquita Banana"...) Which only shows to go ya that we
really have lived in a Banana Republic since January 20, 2001.

If there's a party supply store around, check out the selection of
grab bag gifts. You can usually find these little rubber dinosaur
figurines . They run about 5 for a $1.00 around here (Washington, DC
).
Or how about a raffel? You can get one of those big wood dinosaur
skeltons (or an inflatable Godzilla, or both) as the grand prize.
Send the profits to say the National Center for Science Education.

damned clinking of their infernal hammers in every verse"

If it hasn't been mentioned already, there was the recent PBS series on

If any young children are likely to turn up, get some dinosaurs.
Models, books or posters - or even dinosaurs masks :)
DVDs - 'Jurassic Park'
There is plenty of computer software illustrating evolution. It's
many years since I worked in educational computing, but I
remember that some of it is visually appealing and fun to play
with.
Good luck!

Her brother is a bit closer to evolution in action :). One of my
teachers once showed a picture of a mandril and then commented that it
was "Michael Jackson before the nose surgery". Of course some people
immediately accused him of racism. I think he was just talking about
what everyone knows -- namely that Michael Jackson has transformed
himself from a poor, black man into a rich, white woman.

I think that there are some questions about the curriculum:
http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfullstory.asp?ID=30992
Scientists still disturbed by Georgias evolution plans
The Associated Press - ATLANTA
Even with plans to remove the word evolution from the states school
curriculum scrapped, science educators remain disturbed about Georgias
proposed changes to the teaching of the theory.
So many people were focused on the word, said Cindy Workosky with the
National Science Teachers Association. Its not just a word issue.
After her push to spike the word evolution in Georgias science
curriculum drew criticism and national attention, state schools
Superintendent Kathy Cox announced Thursday that she was reversing the
idea.
The proposal was part of more than 800 pages of draft revisions to the
states teaching guidelines posted last month on the Georgia Department
of Educations Web site.
Educators, along with lawmakers of all political stripes, welcomed the
reversal.
But scientists who have studied the plan say other, more subtle changes
to the curriculum also would undermine the teaching of a theory widely
accepted in scientific circles.
As a result, they say, teachers could be intimidated by anti-evolution
parents or school officials into not teaching it.
By making subtle changes here and there, which weaken the document, this
weakens the shield of protection that science teachers have, said Gerald
Skoog, a Texas Tech University professor who has studied Georgias
proposed changes.
For example, Coxs proposal deletes a definition of evolution provided by
teacher teams who made suggestions on the curriculum changes, said
Skoog, a past president of the National Science Teachers Association who
has monitored the teaching of evolution since 1966.
Skoog said the teachers draft also stated that most scientists at the
end of the 20th Century accepted the basics of Charles Darwins evolution
theory.
That, too, is removed from Coxs draft.
Cox spokesman Nick Smith said Friday that the superintendent welcomes
feedback from teachers and other interested parties.
The state Board of Education is expected to vote on a new curriculum in
May.
Curriculum review is a process and the process works, Smith said. Were
now in the public comment phase of that process.
Smith said Cox has asked the science teachers team to begin meeting
again this month _ weeks before teacher teams from other disciplines are
scheduled to meet.
The superintendent will accept the final recommendation of the teacher
team and take it directly to the board, he said.
