Object: Supreme Court facade crumbles. GOD SPEAKS TO AMERICA!
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A basketball-sized piece of marble molding fell from
the facade over the entrance to the Supreme Court Monday, landing on the
steps near visitors waiting to enter the building.
No one was injured when the stone fell.
The marble was part of the dentil molding that serves as a frame for
sculptural figures. The piece that fell was over the figures, near the
peak of the building, and to the right of the figure of Liberty, who has
the scales of justice on her lap. (Watch pictures from the scene after
the marble chunk fell -- 1:14)
A group of visitors had just entered the building and had passed under
the pediment when the stone fell at 9:30 a.m. ET.
Jonathan Fink, a government attorney waiting in line to attend
arguments, said, "All of a sudden, these blocks started falling. It was
like a thud, thud."

Wow. It only took what, a month? after Scalito's start as Chief Justice
before the edifice began to fall.

Oops. Scalito is NOT Chief Justice. But still, the building has stood for almost
200 years. Bush appoints two judges and the Supreme Court starts falling apart. I
anticipate hearing what the Reverend Robertson and the Reverend Falwell have to
say on the matter.

Ehr... No, it hasn't. The current building had its cornerstone laid
down in 1932, and the court moved in in 1935; it is currently
undergoing its first major renovaction.
The Supreme Court originally met in the Merchant's Exchange Building
in New York City, then moved to D.C. in 1800 with the rest of the
federal government (but without a building of its own). Congress lent
sundry rooms to the Court to meet in inside the Capitol until 1819,
including a short interlude during the War of 1812 when it met in a
private house. From 1819 to 1860 it met in a room below the Senate
chamber, now called "The Old Supreme Court Chamber". From 1860 to
1835 it met in the old Senate Chamber (after the Senate and the House
moved to their new expanded halls in the capitol).
It was in 1929 that Chief Justice Taft convinced Congress to set aside
money for a building for the Supreme Court.

I'm batting 0 today. I thought the Court building was constructed soon after the
White House. My bad.

I need to refresh my memory on the historic buildings in the District of Columbia.
Thanks for the info.
