Surprise! Cheney Flipped-Flopped on Iraq |
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/192908_cheney29.html
In an assessment that differs sharply with his view today, ***** Cheney
more than a decade ago defended the decision to leave Saddam Hussein
in power after the first Gulf War, telling a Seattle audience that
capturing Saddam wouldn't be worth additional U.S. casualties or the
risk of getting "bogged down in the problems of trying to take over
and govern Iraq."

which is of course not a flip flop
12 years ago, saddam did not have the history of repeatedly violating a
cease-fire and his horrendous post war history of repeatedly violating
resolutions and thumbing his nose at his responsibilities vis a vis WMD
etc., nor did we have the experience of 9/11 (as in "9/11 changed
everything)
of course, cheney was WRONG at the time, but that's with 20/20 hindsight.
(20/15 actually)

Cheney's statement had nothing to do with Saddam's bad behaviors.
It was his assessment of the wisdom of invading Iraq and attempting
to govern it.
He was correct.

What part of "No WMD found in Iraq" and "No link between Saddam and
911" vis a vis the 911 Commission did you miss?

the first part is not relevant to what i said
the issue was that he did not comply with inspectors vis a vis WMD's. iow,
he did not demonstrate their destruction (a la for example South America),
and he did not allow inspectors the access they were entitled to. at the
time cheney made his (imo wrong) assessment, SH did not have that history
that ex-post invasion we FOUND no WMD's is not relevant to the question
PRIOR to invasion as to whether at that time, it was believed to be
justified or not
as for the no link part, i am well aware of that.
9/11 changed our strategy from reactive to proactive. i was not inferring
that SH was involved with 911. i am saying that the lesson 911 is that
pre-emption and proactive strikes are now part of our philosophy on fighting
terror

yes he did....Scott Ritter reported 98% WMD's gone in 1998.
and he did not allow inspectors the access they were entitled to.
The inspectors were withdrawn, because Clinton was about to Bomb Baghdad.
Saddam didn't 'throw them out' the were WITHDRAWN.

Wouldn't it have been better for Bush to have followed up the reports by
Richard Clarke, instead of going on holiday ?

'Realism is seductive because once you have accepted the reasonable
notion that you should base your actions on reality, you are too often
led to accept, without much questioning, someone else's version of what
that reality is. It is a crucial act of independent thinking to be
skeptical of someone else's description of reality.'-
