My sources tell me that we are conducting
covert operations inside Syria.
I hope that Syria takes objection to these ops
and strikes at the US.
This will lead to war with Syria.
This is good........

Does America really need any more enemies? Everyone knows that the US
must win a head to head military battle, so you just generate more
terrorists and more excuses to invade somewhere else. I used to be
happy with the US being the sole superpower because it seemed to be
essentially benign. These last few years are changing my perception
considerably.

Oh, it is essentially benign - it's just an essentially
benign 1000lb gorilla that isn't always careful where it
sits and gets quite testy when poked. On the plus side,
it's usually happy to share it's bananas with you if
you ask nicely.

You mean share exploding bananas.
Never trust a gorilla in a pink tu tu.

I'm not sure that we'll need to get rid of Assad militarily. The Hariri (sp?)
murder investigation is proving more and more likely to finger him. His country
is on the verge of instability. With Iraq proving to be a successful Democracy
his people are looking more and more likely to bring about regime change with a
minimum assistance from us.

When did Iraq prove to be a successful democracy ?
And why is the United States spreading Democracy when it is not one
itself. ?

You are very optimistic. If the regime in Syria changes at all it will
most likely be a fundamentalist Islamic regime.
When much of Iraq (sans Kurdistan presumably?) has been taken over by
Islamic militants (after the coming civil war) supported by Iran
there'll be a strip of three countries with Islamic governments. Will
that be the Islamic Caliphate that Jordanian journalist Fouad Hussein
says is the objective of Al Qaeda?
It could be that America has been outsmarted.

I just realised that message was sent to
alt.alien.research,alt.atheism,alt.paranormal.crop-circles,sci.skeptic.
I don't really see the relevance of any of those. I replied from alt.
Atheism, sorry to the others for the OT post.

I should have trimmed the cross-posts myself. I may be optimistic, but we're
well past the point where the kind of unrealistic pessimism can be taken seriously.

As far as the subject being OT, well, welcome to usenet. As far as
the discussion on mid-east politics, look what's happening even as
we speak. It's not east vs. west. It's Arab vs. Persian and, possibly,
some Kurds thrown in for good measure. Look for full blown civil
war to erupt if someone doesn't do something to circumvent it.

Hopefully you are being sarcastic, because it is _not_ good.
Perhaps the Bush Administration wants to provoke an "incident" with
Syria, in hopes of driving those poll numbers back up.

I don't think there's a thing they can do at this point, as far as
making the repuglican party look like anything other than a big bunch
of losers (except to some wackos).
