THE PHILOSOPHY OF SECULAR HUMANISM
By New10
When I hear Christians talk about the importance of their religion, I
have to ask,
What choice do they have There has been a total, tyrannical and
vicious suppression
of free thought ideas and material from the pulpits, as well as from
the courts.
Throughout history, people were scared into their religious beliefs by
threats of earthly
punishments. There was a time that to question the Trinitarian belief
resulted in torture
or death. The Maryland Toleration Act of 1649 prescribed death for
anyone who "shall
deny our savior, Jesus Christ, to be the son of God, or shall deny
that holy trinity."
Even today, many atheists have to hide in the closet, 347 years after
the Toleration Act.
What a sad commentary about our "civilized" culture. Do you think
there is much
difference or more safety in the classroom today than in the days of
Jefferson and
Franklin to challenge Christian beliefs? Retention of the power of
suppression of
secular speech depends on the indoctrination of children who would
become later
objects of Christian brainwashing.
If children were reared in ethical and positive humanism as a life
philosophy,
they would not need Christianity. And perhaps John Adams' wish could
come true. In
a letter to Thomas Jefferson in 1817, Adams wrote, "Twenty times in
the course of my
later reading, have I been on the point of breaking out, This would be
the best of all
possible worlds, if there were no religions in it."' Can you find this
quote in any text
book in America? Censorship is still alive.
I close with this statement for a psychologically healthier society.
Let others read
their Bibles if they have to. If children read the Way of Ethical
Humanism and The Way
of Positive Humanism, by Gerald A. Larue, humanist laureate, let's see
by objective
standards who would be more in touch with reality, more knowledgeable
about the real
world, who would have a higher opinion of self as a human being and
who would be
more self-sufficient, rational, moral and sane.

Throughout history, people were scared into their religious beliefs by
threats of earthly punishments.

The evidence suggests that religious people have been the victims, not the
instigators, of war. And what is better than evidence to "see by objective
standards who would be more in touch with reality, more knowledgeable about
the real world, who would have a higher opinion of self as a human being and
who would be more self-sufficient, rational, moral and sane."

What evidence would this be? Your opinion doesn't count.

The Crusades. The Hundred Years' War. The genocide of the Native
American. The Arab-Israeli "conflict".
The various Inquisitions was a multi-hundred year war against those
with different religious beliefs.
Religious people HAVE been the victims - of OTHER religious people.

The evidence has been that most religious people who have been victims
of war were the victims of other religious people.
