TCT |
Ten days ago I received cable television after 11 years of damaged TV
system due to war in Bosnia. I remarked one chanel called TCT where
some ordinary dressed people scream about decline of society. There is
subtitle for telephone numbers you can pray with and in addition
pictures of credit cards. Yet another proof that religion is mainly
business. Do you know more about this channel, it looks quite
ridiclous?

I have never heard of it, but in the United States we have something called
the 700 Club that was started by a man who was later sent to prison for
fraud. It's named after the original 700 people who gave US$1000 to get it
started. They also created Heritage Park, a theme park for stupid people.
Their names are Tammy and Jim Baker. They stole a lot of money from a lot of
people.

The 700 Club is Pat Robertson and is based in Virginia Beach, VA. The
Bakkers had The PTL Club, which is long since gone these past few
years...

And you're correct. The Bakker's show was the PTL (Praise the Lord,

Well, I'm only quoting Tammy itself, from "Larry King Live" a week ago, so
she / I may be lying! ;-)
She said they started 700 Club. Pat Robertson got involved later, when it
made money. They got ousted and started the PTL network (in CA, I think).
Later they started a third one in another state, I can't recall what she
said it was, tho "Trinity" comes to mind.

Maybe Sunny, but I am sure he, just as Falwell, does not permit
interracial mixing. Blacks are fine as long as they keep to
themselves, you know. I heard a story about a Liberty U student who
fell in love with wome girl not of his race. He couldn't date her
("dating" there meaning sitting in the same room, with other
"couples", reading a bible and being closely monitored) so he married
her without ever talking to her. This is why the fundy is so twisted.

Okay.
A couple of things.
I have disliked Falwell for as long as I can remember, and he (and a
few others) were in large part responsible for my first flight from
religion.
I am also aware that he's got a segregationist past, and that his
claims to have left that past behind don't bear up under close
scrutiny (having known a few people who lived in or near Lynchburg,
Tennessee -- which is, strangely enough, a dry county, and the home of
the Jack Daniels distillery)
I grant there may indeed have been a *culture* which precluded race
mixing at Liberty U -- but even in an article lambasting him, can find
no official *policy* regarding interracial dating.
http://www.onepeoplesproject.com/falwell.htm
In a nutshell, Falwell's a political animal, and overt racism doesn't
play well any more (unless, of course, you're talking about Arabs in
the post 9/11 world)
And I'm not defending him, nor Jim Bakker. I can't imagine how
Falwell's retained any vestige of respectibility over all these years.
But I don't assume, either, that because I don't like them, they
automatically ascribe to all things I find repugnant; or because I can
assume Falwell may still be racist, that Jim and Tammy were. They ran
television ministries. They loved *money*. The courted leaders of
the black churches, which is a very large and powerful group. And as
silly and leaky-eyed as she was, Tammy has a history of being about as
accepting of all people as anyone can be.

:) The deal about not allowing inter-racial dating is real. Or at
least was just a few years (16?) ago. I have no doubt that they would
keep it off any official web site. I think the thing here is *you

saying he sleeps with her. UGGHH!
Don't feel bad about confusing which crook runs which show, they are

Ten days ago I received cable television after 11 years of damaged TV

business. Do you know more about this channel, it looks quite
ridiclous?
I look in on that one pretty regularly, mostly for comic relief. Those
people are cretins of the highest order. I call it the "All *GAWD!* All
The Time Channel."

Here is their website:
http://www.tct-net.org/
In America these people are called "televangelists": a combination of
"television" and "evangelist." Televangelists employ a fairly standard,
tried-and-true formula for getting people worked up and extracting
their cash, so one ministry is largely indistinguishable from the next.
This one seems a bit more subdued than some of the others, and does
allow you to post "free" prayer requests online, so I am not sure what
the catch is there.
