Teenage congressional page 'freaked out' by e-mail exchange with Rep.
Foley
By Joel Hood
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
September 29, 2006
U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fort Pierce, has come under fire for the
appropriateness of e-mails exchanged with a 16-year-old congressional
page.
In a series of e-mails between the six-term incumbent and the page last
year, Foley asks about the teenager's schooling, an upcoming birthday
and requests a picture.
" ... did you have fun at your conference ... what do you want for your
birthday coming up ... what stuff do you like to do," Foley wrote in
one e-mail obtained by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Another read: " ... are you safe ... send me a pic of you as well ... "
ABCNews.com reported Thursday that the 16-year-old page became
uncomfortable with the dialog and forwarded the e-mails to an associate
on Capitol Hill. In an excerpt reported on ABCNews.com, the page wrote:
"Maybe it is just me being paranoid, but seriously. This freaked me
out."
As of late Thursday, the of the U.S. House of Representatives had
received no formal complaint against Foley, a spokeswoman said.
"This is the first we've heard of it," said Salley Collins, spokeswoman
for the clerk.
Foley is seeking re-election in November. His campaign staff
acknowledged the congressman sent the e-mails but said they were
misconstrued. Campaign spokesman Jason Kello blamed Foley's District 16
opponent, Palm Beach Gardens businessman Tim Mahoney, for leaking the
e-mails.
"The e-mails were written in response to a thank-you letter given to
Congressman Foley from a former page," Kello wrote in a statement.
"This is nothing more than a political attack and an attempt at the
worst kind of character assassination."
Mahoney's campaign staff denied leaking the e-mails. They released a
statement of their own: "The seriousness of these allegations goes far
beyond the tit for tat of a political campaign. This is a matter for
the appropriate authorities to investigate. I believe Mr. Foley
deserves the benefit of the doubt until these allegations are proven to
be true or false."
Mahoney, a Democrat running his first political campaign, earlier this
month filed a defamation lawsuit against the Foley campaign for what he
described as misleading television ads. A week later, Mahoney hosted a
news conference in West Palm Beach to accuse Foley of improperly
receiving homestead exemptions in both Florida and Washington, D.C.
Foley denied the claim.
Foley's camp said the e-mails were yet another political stunt.
"There have not been any allegations made by anyone except by Tim
Mahoney and the Democrats who are attempting to misrepresent a series
of innocent communications to prop up a failing political campaign,"
the statement said.
Foley, a Lake Worth native, has been one of the most outspoken
supporters in the U.S. House of Representatives for restricting rights
for convicted sex offenders. In July, he was a primary sponsor of a
bill designed to better track sexual predators and toughen penalties
for those who use the Internet to lure young victims.
By midday Thursday, the Foley story was the lead on ABCNews.com and was
reported by numerous Web sites. Copies of Foley's e-mails also were
available online, where several discussion boards debated the
appropriateness of Foley's remarks.

Congressman resigns after e-mails questioned
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Mark Foley, R-Florida, submitted a letter of
resignation from Congress on Friday in the wake of questions about
e-mails he wrote a former male page, according to a congressional
official. Foley, 52, had been considered a shoo-in for re-election
until the e-mails surfaced in recent days.

In today's witch hunt climate, once you're accused of sexual misconduct with
"underaged" people there's no good outcomr - whether you're guilty or not.

What which hunt? They have direct evidence. If it was a "he said, he
said" situation I would have said wait until we have evidence and the
principle of "innocent until proven guilty" But unless the Congressman
is going to say that the e-mails are phony the evidence is already in.
His resigning so quickly is an indication that the e-mails are genuine.
Most politicians would fight tooth and nail to save their careers, even
when they are guilty. Senator Kennedy with Chappaquiddick in 1969-1970;
President Nixon in 1973; President Clinton in 1998; and former District
Attorney Jeanine Pirro today in 2006 (although to be fair the jury is
still out about her doing anything wrong). The fact that Foley got out
of Dodge so quickly is very suspicious and any unrevealed evidence
probably very daming.

He said a "=with-hunt climate," not that former Rep Foley was caught in
a witch hunt. This atmosphere began to brew with the Whitewater
investigation that tarnished President Clinton for political ends.

Some would argue that it this present political atmosphere started with
the anti President Reagan feelings of the 1980's. The point of my
answer to him (and note the politically balanced theme in it with me
referencing two Democrats and two Republicans) was there is clear
evidence of Foley's guilt. No witch-hunt needed.

Accused misconduct?
What part of sending emails asking boys to drop their underpants don't
you understand is highly inappropriate for anybody to do and for a
member of Congress that flapped his gums to pass tougher laws about
sexual preadators and one that sits on the committee that writes such
laws and it turns out he is one himself is too juicy a story to die a
early death. Just wait till the news media gets cranked up.
I bet there's a lot more to this breaking story. Stay tuned.

Right ---- Probably the major reason why he resigned so quickly was
because he knew the worst was sure to come. Prediction --- The guy
commits suicide within a month. Liberals who get caught in stuff like
this seem to live with it a lot better than conservatives. This guy is
100% hypocrite. He was even on the committee to investigate exploited
children via the internet.

Well, that's typical ABC journalisn tactics no matter
if you're a Senator or a homeless wanderer in Jeruselum.
So it mostly only matters to PBS, since they're
the only people really stupid enough to care

You are right and I apologize. The first report said he merely emailed
the boy and asked if he was safe and if he could get a picture. Very
benign.
And as far as the chat you talk about, yes he should definitely be
investigated. Maybe he will even be charged with laws he created!!
The real Fudged up thing is that the other committe members knew he was
cybersexing 16 year olds and didnt do anything.

I don't think Hilary is much more than average with an attractive
bright manner. Rice is downright ugly. But when it comes to most
people, it is hard to seperate the personality that activates the
body. No doubt with a sharper mind, the face would take that cow like

Speaking as someone who really doesn't like her personality-wise all that much,
I can honestly say I do think she's what you might call a "handsome" woman. Not
"gorgeous" in the typical fashion-world sense of the word, but by no means
anything I would consider "ugly".

Literally. I saw the picture and flinched at the face.
ugly.
She is gorgeous to me.
But when it comes to most
people, it is hard to seperate the personality that activates the
body.
-----
You have to explain that one.
Beauty isn't static - it's in how people move, how they react, how
they speak.
----
And then we are using different standards. I am using just physical
aesthetics as my measure, nothing more. Moving reacting or how they
speak, especially when just looking at a two dimensional photograph
doesn't enter into it.
I think women react far more strongly to voice and carriage than men
do.
----
And the fact that you are a woman might also enter into it. To put it
at its most primitive, I see Condy at some level as a potential mate,
you don't (assuming you are a heterosexual woman), so I think most
heterosexual men judging on pure visual looks would disagree with you.
My husband doesn't. He doesn't think she is ugly, but he doesn't
think she is beautiful either.
Face it, beauty is subjective. I happen to be an artist with a
following, I'm well aware of tastes.
Beauty, like art, *is* subjective. I'd agree that Condi doesn't meet
my own qualifications of beauty - her natural "just about to scowl"
look is off-putting to me - just as I do not see what you create (while
nice) as art, but as crafting. "Folk art" is about as far as I'd go
vis-a-vis calling it "art".
Hunter sees Condaleeza as beautiful, and sees her beauty stemming from
a combination of her physical and kinesthetic qualities. You see your
creations as art as a result of a combination of their physical and
other qualities. I'm guessing that part of "other qualities" may stem
from others' appreciation of these objects as well as your pleasure in
creating them.
Carmen
I love Garrison Keillor. Now there's a personality and wit that takes
over a poor shell.
----
And that is your standard. I don't use that standard. I can royally
hate a girl who has a deceitful mean personality, but still be able to
separate that from her physical appearance and judge her physically
beautiful and attractive. I guess Naomi Cambell would be a example that
we would both know. Personality wise she is one ugly person, but she is
still physically very beautiful, otherwise I doubt she would get work
as a Supermodel (though I myself don't find her all that attractive, I
like angel faces. That is what I regard as beautiful). That is the
standard I use. It may be shallow, but there it is
I like cute women. A young Sally Field or Kim Fields or Holly
Robinson-Peete or Ming Na. or Grace Park or Parminder Nagara as a few
examples:

Grace Park:

I put Condoleeza Rice in the cute category. Again, shallow but my
standard.
I wouldn't.
No doubt with a sharper mind, the face would take that cow like demeanor.
---
"Cow like demeanor"? You will have to explain that.
typo - with a sharper mind, the face would lose that cow like
demeanor.
----
I still don't understand how you get that. A "sharper mind"? That
sounds like a dig at Dr. Rice.
LOL, no it wasn't snide. I don't think she's very swift. Never have.
There are smart conservatives, but she's not one of them. A sharp
mind adds a lot to a face as it does with Hilary.
It sounds like you are judging her looks by what policy she follows.
No. But since I'm a liberal, I probably do see a lot more of the
gawd awful photos of her.
----
And I think, as I suspected before, your opinion of her looks is partly
politically motivated.
LOL again. It wasn't ~my~ political motivation that chose to put the
pictures where she looks like a chimp on the war path on the web site.
Perhaps you can tell me what your idea of beautiful is by citing a
female example within or outside government.
Audrey Hepburn, Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Julia Roberts
----
And I would agree with all of those. I find all of them attractive
myself, especially Halle Berry (she is very cute) and Angelina Jolie
(even though she is not the cute type I like). I see you didn't list
any females in government. That is also the standard I am using. Now I
am not saying that Condy is as glamorous as the women listed, but by
government standards she is very good looking. And I think she could
more than hold her own if you use the female newscaster standard
(personally I think Sue Simmons in New York on NBC channel 4 claims

Katy Couric comes in a close third:

We have to agree to disagree. I still think your Politics is governing
your preferences in this case. If she was a liberal she would probably
be on your list the prettiest women in politics. As I said, even though
Hillary Clinton is a democrat I still found her very attractive and
pretty back in the 1990's, and she still is. her politics doesn't
affect my opinion.
I couldn't think of a single woman in politics that is very pretty. I
suppose my standards are a lot higher. But then again, it's not
something that is important at all to me, so I rarely notice.

I was making an analogy between beauty and art. I used your statement
that you were an "artist with a following" and were "well aware of
tastes" to mean that that would be a good avenue to use in countering
your earlier statement to Hunter that your measure of beauty consists
merely of physical aesthetics. By comparing and contrasting Hunter's
view of Condaleeza with your view of your art I hoped to show you how
qualities other than the mere physical become involved in both beauty
and art.
As for where I saw your work, it's not much more than a few mouse
clicks until "She's an artist? Really? Cool. I wonder what she
does?" turns into "Those are pretty beads. Some nice computer graphics
and fractals for the Cafe Press crowd too." Except for some wonderful
pencil drawings - the nude with the bicycle especially caught my
attention for the mood it evoked - nothing there got past my eyes. To
others that clearly isn't true, and since the perceived objects (or
people) don't change in any material fashion, both "beauty" and "art"
must lie outside the physical boundaries of the objects they are
supposed to lie within.
I hope that makes sense.
