July 28, 2004 -- BOSTON Teresa Heinz Kerry last night delivered a
somber speech like no other would-be first lady lecturing Americans on
morality, her right to be "opinionated" and the need to listen to the
"wise voices" of women. "By now, I hope it will come as no surprise
to anyone that I have something to say," said Heinz Kerry, speaking
with deep intensity in a 23-minute speech in which she barely
mentioned her husband for the first 13 minutes.
She spoke a few words in five languages English, Spanish, French,
Italian and Portuguese and then moved on to "my mother's warmth," the
Galileo Jupiter space probe and "the mystic chords of our national
memory."
Wearing a zip-up suit in Nancy Reagan red, she really smiled just
once, when she pointedly noted that her husband has put "his life on
the line for his country" a reminder that John Kerry served in Vietnam
and President Bush didn't.
"John is a fighter. He earned his medals the old-fashioned way, by
putting his life on the line for his country," she said.
"No one will defend this nation more vigorously than he will and he
will always, always be first in the line of fire."
The crowd sat silently through much of her speech and applause was
scattered, as if the delegates didn't quite know what to make of the
exotic, Mozambique-born woman who gave none of the personal insights
or anecdotes that spouses usually offer.
Instead, the speech was focused heavily on her own history, her own
family and her own views, and said nothing of what John Kerry is like
as a husband.
"It has to rank among the most bizarre convention speeches in history.
It was a chance for her to give a glimpse into what John Kerry is all
about and she didn't mention him for the first 13 minutes," said a
Republican strategist.
But New York state Democratic chair Herman Farrell said, "What you
should be looking at is the substance, not the delivery."
A Democratic senator cautioned. "You want to keep it energized and end
on a high note. She should have ended sooner."
Even before the tough talk, Heinz Kerry was the talk of the convention
for her finger waving "Shove it!" crack at a reporter who asked why
she'd used the term "un-American" about opponents.
The speech by Heinz Kerry the ketchup heiress worth an estimated $1
billion came on the heels of an ABC News poll showing the public likes
First Lady Laura Bush a lot better.
Mrs. Bush's ratings among voters are 66 percent favorable and just 12
percent negative. By contrast Mrs. Kerry is rated positively by just
27 percent and negatively by 26.
In another surprising remark for a candidate's spouse, running mate
John Edwards's wife Elizabeth suggests that her husband is more
"respectful" to foes than Vice President Cheney in a CBS interview
being broadcast tonight.
"I don't think it's productive," Mrs. Edwards tells Dan Rather in a
reference to Vice President Cheney's use of the F-word in a rebuke at
a Democratic senator.
The head of Kids for Kerry, Little Orphan Annie lookalike Ilana
Wexler, 12, of California, said from the podium that Cheney "used a
really bad word," adding: "If I said that word, I'd be put on a
timeout."

his tireless work as a legislator, Edward Kennedy would have brought
comfort to her in her old age."
