Terri Schiavo And False Campaign Rhetoric
By Daniel Downs
As presidential campaign rhetoric spews across America's airwaves, liberals
of all stripes and special interests fault Republican's for their zealous
efforts to defend Terri Schiavo's right to life. Even the prestigious
financial publication, The Economist, got in on the act recently. The
liberal spiel is that the federal government had no legal right to interfere
with a state judicial matter. More important to Michael Schiavo and
supporters is the view that family not government should decide such medical
matters.

The family (the husband *IS* the immediate family) TRIED to make the
decision. The Republican Party tried to BLOCK the FAMILY decision.
So much for "family values". They only count when they coincide with
the *anti-family values* of the Republican Party.

Oh, the revisionism is starting already!
The Schiavo case was a real low point for the Republican morality
fascists. Nothing could have showcased their hypocrisy more clearly. A
party that is supposed to be supportive of "States rights," and against
"Big Government" meddling in private affairs, couldn't fall over
themselves fast enough to get involved in the Schiavo case. I especially
loved Sen Frist, a medical doctor, presuming to challenge the diagnoses of
many neurologists that Terri was in a persistent vegetative state, with no
hope of recovery. The basis for his opinion was a few minutes of video,
carefully edited from several *hours* of footage of Terri making random
grimaces, to try to make it look like she was responding to her parents.
If the politicians involved had a single shred of decency, including Bush
himself, they would have committed hara-kiri long ago. Instead, they will
continue to try the "Swift-boat tactics" that have worked for them in the
past. Hopefully, voters will be more selective this time around.

The closest they came was a "shred" of skin when one of them caught a burr on

I had no idea that The Economist was liberal.

The
liberal spiel is that the federal government had no legal right to interfere
with a state judicial matter. More important to Michael Schiavo and
supporters is the view that family not government should decide such medical
matters.

And they are right. What is your point?

Hey, the clinically brain-dead are a major constituency of the Religious
Right.

OK, so other than marking your 200th troll on Schiavo, what's *your* point,
