Terror suspects held in secret CIA prisons |
Thank God the CIA is able to accomplish their mission, which is to get every
shred of information by whatever means necessary from America's declared
enemies. Years ago, congressional red-tape would have hampered the agency in
it's quest to do it's duty. A CIA with less restrictions is a highly
competent agency.

Terror suspects held in secret CIA prisons
SENIOR al-Qaeda members are being held in top-secret CIA- operated "black
site" prisons across the world, it has emerged.
According to anonymous CIA sources quoted by the Washington Post, the agency
has been transporting the captives to secret facilities in a number of
countries for interrogation.
The covert prisons - of which up to eight have been used - are referred to
as "black sites" in classified United States documents and virtually nothing
is known about who the detainees are, how they are interrogated or about
decisions on how long they will be held.
Interrogators at the black sites are permitted to use the CIA's approved
"Enhanced Interrogation Techniques". They include tactics such as
"waterboarding" in which a prisoner is made to believe he or she is
drowning.
The covert global prison system was reportedly set up after the attacks on
the United States on 11 September, 2001. "Several democracies in Eastern
Europe" as well as Thailand and Afghanistan and a small centre at the
Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba were involved.
The CIA has not acknowledged the existence of the secret network and White
House spokesman Scott McClellan would neither confirm nor deny the story.
"I'm not going to get into specific intelligence activities. I will say that
the president's most important responsibility is to protect the American
people," he said.

Yeah, "Thank God" that America does not need to stand up to its
obligations.
I hold no brief for the prisoners. I do hold a brief for the
reputation of the United States of America. We are Americans, and we
hold ourselves to humane standards of treatment of people no matter
how evil or terrible they may be. To do otherwise undermines our
security, but it also undermines our greatness as a nation. We are
not simply any other country. We stand for something more in the
world -- a moral mission, one of freedom and democracy and human
rights at home and abroad. We are better than these terrorists, and
we will we win. The enemy we fight has no respect for human life or
human rights. They don\u2019t deserve our sympathy. But this isn't
about who they are. This is about who we are. These are the values
that distinguish us from our enemies. - Senator John McCain (R-Az)
But then, asking you to understand "values" is like asking
asking a vampire to drink V8.

Question: would you support other nations treating American citizens this
way?

I'm outraged. Glad to see you are, too.

Maybe difficult to understand from US perspective, but perhaps I can
help to explain:
In Europe we still value freedom of speech, principle of one being
innocent until proven quilty, fair trial in a proper court of law,
right to privacy etc. Something people stateside have been more than
happy to give up to get in return more "security" in their "war" on
terror.
Nazi Germany and communist governments used to have secret jails and
torture chambers. Idea of some EU state secretly allowing the US do
run such facilities here is what causes the outrage. Or wannabe
country like Romania
Not that I would not mind Romania being would not fit for membership.
as it would just drain my tax euros in regional aid...

How do we know if it is accomplishing its mission? Certainly the White
House has been blaming the CIA for every failure of its decision-making
processes.
You might also recall that the person who escaped from a prison in
Afghanistan had given the US a whole bunch of worthless intelligence
while imprisoned on an army base. Being lawless is not the prescription
for being effective.
