Object: Thanksgiving to God by George Washington 1789
General Thanksgiving
By the PRESIDENT of the United States Of America
A PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of
Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly
to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress
have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of
the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by
acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty
God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a
form of government for their safety and happiness:"
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of
NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of
that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good
that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering
unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of
the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the
signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His
providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great
degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for
the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish
Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly
the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious
liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and
diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various
favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and
supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to
pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in
publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties
properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all
the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and
constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to
protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn
kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and
concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue,
and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto
all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be
best.
GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in
the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

I'd like to hear what Washington's slaves thought of this proclamation.
Got any quotes from them?

So, now (aside from top-posting), you're saying Washington
starved his slaves? Doesn't that undercut your efforts to
present his words as something inspirational?

No, everyone says with excitement "I'm starved" when asking for something to
be passed at the table. It's Thanksgiving. Many of the slaves became
Christians over the years. If the slave owners didn't care about them they
wouldn't have taught them the Word. Look, slavery has existed in every
single society the world has ever known. There were also (non-black) slaves
that were paying off their debt to get to America. (They didn't have a Visa
card in those days to 'charge it'.) It was AMERICA however that fought a war
and spilled it's own blood to stop it. America could not have been founded
if they would have tried to fight the battle before the founding since the
Southern states depended on it and would not easily give it up. Second
guessing the founding fathers on this issue is so pathetic, it is the stuff
of pathetic liberal trash. Do yourself a favor and get a deeper
understanding of history. You look really silly attacking the founding
fathers on this issue when one considers the rest of the world and
'reality'.

Yes, especially the ones who really are starving. And I doubt seriously
that any of Washington's slaves were invited to the dinner table.
Except the ones who were doing the serving, of course...

It's Thanksgiving. Many of the slaves became Christians over the
years.

Yes, whether they wanted to or not.

If the slave owners didn't care about them they wouldn't have taught
them the Word.

If the slave owners did care about them, they wouldn't have owned them
as slaves. And in any event, how does religious brainwashing indicate
caring or concern?

Look, slavery has existed in every single society the world has ever
known.

And that makes it right?

There were also (non-black) slaves that were paying off their debt to
get to America. (They didn't have a Visa card in those days to 'charge
it'.)

Not that indentured servitude was much better, but the vast majority of
the African slaves who were brought to the new world were chattel
slaves. They weren't asked if they wanted to come over and weren't
given an opportunity to buy their freedom.

It was AMERICA however that fought a war and spilled it's own blood to
stop it.

Yeah, after most of the rest of the civilized world had already done so.
And the southern half of America was fighting to preserve slavery, not
to stop it.

America could not have been founded if they would have tried
to fight the battle before the founding since the Southern states
depended on it and would not easily give it up.

How does this justify maintaining slavery?

Second guessing the
founding fathers on this issue is so pathetic, it is the stuff of
pathetic liberal trash.

Yeah, we should be like you upper-echelon trailer park residents who
never question anything, no matter how stupid, illogical or unethical.
Thanks, but I'd rather be "pathetic liberal trash" than a mindless drone
for the radical right any day of the week...

Do yourself a favor and get a deeper understanding of history.

You should do the same. You obviously don't understand history well
enough to know what slavery was really like for the people who had to
endure it.

You look really silly attacking the founding
fathers on this issue when one considers the rest of the world and
'reality'.

Attacking anyone for something they deserve to be attacked for is not
silly. Silly is making excuses for slave owners. No, actually that's
not so much silly as it is nauseating...

Look, slavery has existed in every single society the world has ever

Especially those who used the Christian god's rules for slaves as
justification for slavery.

There were also (non-black) slaves that were paying off their debt to
get to America.

Those were servants, not slaves. They weren't owned by those they
were indentured to. Their children couldn't be sold. They couldn't
be legally killed (or worse).

It was AMERICA however that fought a war and spilled it's own blood to
stop it.

It was America that it fought against.

America could not have been founded if they would have tried

There were no Southern states when Columbus instituted slavery in the
New World.

The Anti-Top-posting Nazis are the worst. Someone could post a cure to
cancer and these fucking idiots would berate him or her for top-posting. How
pathetic it is to know that there are such people out there trolling
newsgroups looking for top-posters to hit on the knuckles with a ruler. And
oftentimes their idea of a proper posting technique is to pick apart prior
posts interspersing their comments in between various disjointed paragraphs
so that in the end it is a big jumble with half of the original comments
removed (those parts that they did not have an answer to) changing the
context of the comments that are left. If they really had anything serious
to add they would just top-post their own comments and let their comments
stand on their own. If someone is so fucking stupid as to not be able to
browse through prior posts to understand the thread then they do not need to
be reading the fucking post in the first place. And their use of the 'plonk'
is so fucking gay. It appears that they think they are insulting you when
they tell you they have 'plonked' your post. What a bunch of fucking fags.

has existed in every single society the world has ever known.

Of course, you realize, America was split down the middle by the states
that receded from the union. Competing nationalisms, political turmoil,
the definition of freedom, the preservation of the Union, the fate of
slavery and the structure of our society and economy could all be listed
as significant contributing factors in the Civil War. Perhaps *you*
should bone up on history before you make an ***** of yourself on Usenet.

There
were also (non-black) slaves that were paying off their debt to get to
America. (They didn't have a Visa card in those days to 'charge it'.)
It was AMERICA however that fought a war and spilled it's own blood to
stop it. America could not have been founded if they would have tried
to fight the battle before the founding since the Southern states
depended on it and would not easily give it up. Second guessing the
founding fathers on this issue is so pathetic, it is the stuff of
pathetic liberal trash. Do yourself a favor and get a deeper
understanding of history. You look really silly attacking the founding
fathers on this issue when one considers the rest of the world and
'reality'.

By the way, if you couldn't figure out what I was saying and why I was
saying it, it is because I top-posted a response to each of your
comments. Confusing, isn't it?

Sure it does. They're slaves to their god, people are slaves to them.

It wasn't an insult (except to blacks who have sold out to the white man).
Soul food is worth a try if you haven't had the pleasure. You haven't lived
till you've had it.
From: http://www.cuisinenet.com/digest/region/usa/soul.shtml
What we know as "soul food" is the descendant of slave cooking. It is the
brilliant masterpiece that derived from want. Slave cooking is distinct in
its use of greens, beans, and the parts of the pig rejected at the
plantation house: pig's knuckles, ears, tripe, hog maws. These were added to
the corn rations which were sometimes the only food allotted to the slaves.
The meager pantry was further supplemented by wild game and fish pulled from
the streams. Squirrel and possum figure among the meats used, catfish,
trout, and shrimp among the fish. Much soul food requires the use of only
one pot, as time for cooking and money for its tools were both hard to come
by. (A similar drive to conserve resources influenced the development of the
wok and the Southeast Asian kitchen). Soul food, like all inspired cuisine,
is greater than the sum of its parts. African and West Indian cooks and
their offspring were unafraid of hot spices. Chiles figure boldly; Tabasco
sauce is as prevalent as salt in soul kitchens. The variety of soul food is
astonishing: chitlins or chitterlings, pig`s intestines served boiled or
fried in a batter; mess o` greens, or greens (most likely collard or mustard
greens) cooked with salt pork until soft and delicious; red beans and rice;
barbeque ribs slow-cooked long over an outdoor fire pit; sweet potato and
peanut croquettes; cornbread-stuffed turkey with giblet gravy, and corn
fritters -- an endless feast.

I'm well familiar with what "soul food" is, and ate quite a bit of what
would probably pass for "soul food" when I was growing up. Of course, I
was raised by rednecks, so it was never referred to as "soul food" in our
home. But I digress...your remark was obviously meant to be condescending,
just like it usually is when you hear some whites spitting out

Only a fucked up piece of ***** moron like you would judge "Christianity"
based upon one person that you don't even know calling you out on your own
insults on an anonymous internet forum. Grow the ***** up you cocksucking
lowlife *****. You ***** fuckers think that you can just insult Christians
any way you want on these forums and then you just wait for any response
that isn't "Christian" enough for you - even though you think Christianity
is a bunch of ***** anyway - and then you jump on them all over again. What a
fucked up cocksucking lowlife you are.
