Object: The atheist ethos.
Someone expressed in one of the exchanges on this forum his perception that
"religious" people attempt to link atheism to the communist regimes of the
worst kind and that he resented that.
I think the perceived link comes from people's attempts to trace back the
steps of movements that started as caring to alleviate injustices then
adopted attractive rhetoric of enlightenment and free thinking then picked
up atheism, then turned into dictatorship.
Not every one who picked up the doubts of atheism became a dictator.
However tracing back the steps of any dictator can lead to isolating certain
values. Those values are often included in the rhetoric that is passed,
without any self-criticism, within the atheist circles.
Decent atheists and agnostics started questioning God because of
contradictions that they experienced in ethics around them. This is quite
legitimate and welcome.
However in the midst of the culture of sarcasm, complaints and doubts one
often gets fooled by a different breed of human behavior that preys on the
atheist ethos. It requires serious watchfulness and a great amount of
self-criticism to navigate through. If it does not have the self-criticism
then one should see a red flag. When the culture of the "free thinkers"
turns into violence-protected territories where entrants have to appease the
regulars then one can see another red flag. It is no longer a culture of
"free-thinkers".
God bless you,

You know, if you actually have something to say, just come right out
and say it.

Yeah. He shouldn't worry about hurting anyones feelings, right?
You know, that statement... gets me thinking...
"When the culture of the "free thinkers" turns into violence-protected
territories..."
Kind of like the cultures of religion setting violence-protected
territories throughout history.
"...where entrants have to appease the regulars then one can see another red
flag."
Isn't that so similar to a Protestant in Catholic Ireland, or a Catholic
in Protestant Ireland, or, for that matter, any other religious nuthouse
around the world? At least *most atheists don't want to see others "Burn in
hell", so to speak...

What's more, you never hear an *atheist* say "Just kill 'em all, and let God
sort 'em out"! In spite of all their (nauseating) sanctimony and
self-professed moral clarity, these credulous 'believers' actually use their
'God' as *a wedge to separate themselves from other people*. For from an
atheist's perspective, we humans are all just fallible little animals who
are here for each other (even if we often find the implications of that
reality difficult to put into practise...!). To a 'believer', on the other
hand, humans are primarily here 'for God', should all 'love God more than
their families', are accountable 'to God', etc etc -- and from within that
delusional system the humans who 'know and accept' these (obscenely inhuman)
ideas are regarded as 'better' than the ones who don't...!
Definition of 'God': a *crowbar* that believers use *to keep themselves
semi-detached from other members of their species*...
Katt.
