Matthew 5: 38-42.
Teaching About Retaliation.
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a
tooth.' But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him
as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand
him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one
mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and
do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow."

Obviously you elected to forget about the plagues brought upon Egypt
(particularly the death of the first born) as retalaiation for not
"lettingmy people go".
Get your head out of your ***** - were the whole bible made into a movie - it
would not only be science fiction, it would be X rated - at least for

Most of the religous Bible tumpers have never read the Bibles with any
degree of perception. Almost all Christians have never read the Bible to any
extent. They only listen to what their preacher tells them the Bible says
and means.
The Bibles are books of shear nonsense, myths, fables, atrosities and
impossible tales.

The Greeks had the golden rule some five hundred years
before Jesus was born. It was quite popular among the Roman
philosophers, and Jesus could easily have picked it up form
someone. There are variations of it in nearly every religion.

While the Golden Rule - a term not found in Scripture, by the
way - may have variants in other cultures, it is illogical to
presume they originated with those cultures, if you deny that
claim for the teachings of Christ.

"Do not return evil to your adversary, Requite with kindness the one who
does evil to you, Maintain justice for your enemy, Be friendly to your
enemy" .
("Akkadian Councils of Wisdom," Pritchard's Ancient Near Eastern Texts.)
Plato 400 years before Christ has in one of his dialogues Socrates telling
us likewise, seeking revenge is unwise and to be avoided. See The Crito.
All of this long preceeded Jesus.
Crito

Cr. Yes.
Soc. Then we must do no wrong?
Cr. Certainly not.
Soc. Nor when injured injure in return, as the many imagine; for we must
injure no one at all?
Cr. Clearly not.
Soc. Again, Crito, may we do evil?
Cr. Surely not, Socrates.
Soc. And what of doing evil in return for evil, which is the morality of the
many--is that just or not?
Cr. Not just.
Soc. For doing evil to another is the same as injuring him?
Cr. Very true.

Soc. Then we ought not to retaliate or render evil for evil to any one,
whatever evil we may have suffered from him. But I would have you consider,
Crito, whether you really mean what you are saying. For this opinion has
never been held, and never will be held, by any considerable number of
persons; and those who are agreed and those who are not agreed upon this
point have no common ground, and can only despise one another when they see
how widely they differ. Tell me, then, whether you agree with and assent to
my first principle, that neither injury nor retaliation nor warding off
evil by evil is ever right. And shall that be the premise of our argument?
Or do you decline and dissent from this? For so I have ever thought, and
continue to think; but, if you are of another opinion, let me hear what you
have to say. If, however you remain of the same mind as formerly, I will
proceed to the next step.

I can see the point about not being selfish, showing tolerance, and being
more of a non-violent type. But when a Hitler invades your country, has your
citizens beaten mercilessly, 'borrows' your natural resources without any
intention of giving them of giving back something in return, doesn't even
bother to go to court to take your possessions for himself, and transforms
your citizens into slave labor, I don't think 'turning the other cheek' is
exactly what needs to be done in this situation. You end up getting your *****
handed back to you in a hand-basket doing that. What in the hell was Jesus
thinking? And isn't he the same guy who 'mouthed' Mt. 10:34-36? And isn't he
contradicting the 'spirit' of Mosaic law here?

Everybody misrepresents this with 20-20 hindsight. It was only 20
years after an un-necessary war that "killed the flower of a
generation" because three first cousins were spoiling for a fight, the
King, the Kaiser and the Tsar. It had been called "the war to end all
wars" and a large percentage of an entire generation of men were
slaughtered. Nobody wanted to go through that again.

I *do* understand that. I am pro-military and firmly believe that the
military should be used *only* in a justified cause. Poor Neville
Chamberlain, was probably thinking that Herr Hitler, being a casualty of the
first world war himself, had no taste for any more bloodshed. But he didn't
take into account the intense resentment the extremely harsh Treaty of
Versailles generated within the German populace. Hate does some crazy things
to people who have been mistreated. The people who are treating me so
harshly at the moment should learn a lesson or two from history. Extreme
ill-will does no one any good.

That's nothing. The Ten Commandments teaches us that it's a SIN to eat
cheeseburgers:
Ex 34:12-16 - Take care not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of
the land to which you are going, or it will become a snare among you.
You shall tear down their altars, break their pillars, and cut down
their sacred poles (for you shall worship no other god, because the
Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God). You shall not make a
covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for when they prostitute
themselves to their gods and sacrifice to their gods, someone among them
will invite you, and you will eat of the sacrifice. And you will take
wives from among their daughters for your sons, and their daughters who
prostitute themselves to their gods will make your sons also prostitute
themselves to their gods. You shall not make cast idols. You shall keep
the festival of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened
bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of Abib;
for in the month of Abib you came out from Egypt. All that first opens
the womb is mine, all your male livestock, the firstborn of cow and
sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, or if you
will not redeem it you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your
sons you shall redeem. No one shall appear before me empty-handed. Six
days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even in
plowing time and in harvest time you shall rest. You shall observe the
festival of weeks, the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the festival
of ingathering at the turn of the year. Three times in the year all your
males shall appear before the Lord God, the God of Israel. For I will
cast out nations before you, and enlarge your borders; no one shall
covet your land when you go up to appear before the Lord your God three
times in the year. You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with
leaven, and the sacrifice of the festival of the passover shall not be
left until the morning. The best of the first fruits of your ground you
shall bring to the house of the Lord your God.
Here's the part about cheeseburgers:
You shall not boil a kid in its mother's milk.
The Lord said to Moses: Write these words; in accordance with these
words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel. He was there with
the Lord forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank
water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten
commandments.

Hello,
Let's say for the moment, your right about the cheeseburger thing. It
wouldn't make any difference. Christians are not under the obligations
of the Mosaic Laws. Jesus ended them at his death. Col 2:14,
"having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was
against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it
to the cross." (NIV)
So HAPPY CHEESEBURGERING!!

Then why do so many Christians want the 10 commandments preached
around the world, since they were part of the "old" laws? Why do they
quote the Old Testament when speaking out against things that are
supposed to be "old covenant" laws?

"having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was
against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it
to the cross." (NIV)

Why not read the rest of it?
"15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public
spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross."
Jesus never disarmed the powers and authorities - they ended up
killing him, and you call that a triumph? He was never king of the
Jews, never ruled over Judea or Israel, was never a high priest, and
had no authority to "take away" the current Jewish laws.
He was a fake and pretended messiah and deserved what he got
if the stories about him are really true.

the lovely and talented
broadcast on alt.atheism:

Matthew 5: 38-42.
Teaching About Retaliation.
"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a
tooth.' But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.
When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him
as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand
him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one
mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and
do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow."

And you point would be?
You see, the claim that there are standards in the bible is hollow and
ridiculous unless there is some indication that those standards are actually
put into practice in the real world. Sure the empty biblical theorictical
standards look all shiney and clean. They keep looking that way because
they are never put into practice in the real world. They are like a
football uniform that comes back from the laundry and is hung up in a
locker. Sure it looks better than the uniform of a player who is playing in
a real game on a muddy field. The clean uniform in the locker keeps its
bright colors. The name and number on the back is crisp and legible. It
even smells nice. It just depends upon whether you want to look at your
uniform in a locker or whether you are going to put it on and get in the
game.
Christian principle are like the uniform in the locker. No one actual puts
them on and gets in the game. Secularists have ideals too. But they don't
leave them in the locker. They put them on and get in the game. They try
to do good in the real world, and that can get muddy. They don't sit in the
lockerroom looking at their uniforms and dreaming of the game in heaven
where there isn't any mud and the uniform won't get dirty. Secularists have
to get out in the world and get in the game, because that is the only game
they have got.
So, now that you have your jesus man in the white house for almost six
years, are you happy with the outcome? Are you still counting on using
government to do harm to the people you dislike in the name of god? How is
that working out for you?

The "eye for an eye" phrase sets forth monetary recompensation for
damages, such as we have today, as opposed to previous law codes, where
"an eye for an eye" meant, literally, an eye for an eye.
Which standard would you care to see in practice in the world today?

When are you getting to the one about leaving when you're not wanted?
