The biggest boom in history could see China overtake the UK by next

Shanghai - the China boom, the greatest boom in the history of
humankind, continues. The first quarter GDP figures are not yet
available but it looks very much as though the first three months of
this year have seen the same cracking pace of growth - 8 per cent plus
- as last year. At this rate, 2005 will see China overtake the UK as
the world's fourth largest economy.
Here in Shanghai, China's largest city and its commercial capital, the
pace is even faster. Industrial production is running 24 per cent up
year-on-year, exports are up 67 per cent, and retail sales more than 9
per cent. The physical fabric seems to change as you look out of the
window. It is an extraordinary sight to see buildings that did not
exist when I was last here five months ago, now 30 storeys in the sky:
you can see the evidence that investment in property is up 34 per cent
year-on-year.

According to World Almanac 2004 China's GDP for 2002 was $5.7 trillion while
the UK's was $1.5 trillion.

What happens when China crashes? And it is sure to. Booms have a way
of starting off with legit economic activity and ending up with semi-
legal/illegal transactions and speculation in the driver's seat. I can
imagine every chance comer, con merchant and criminal alike deciding
they can ride the crest of the wave confident that they can jump off
before the wave crashes into the headland of reality. China being such
a major vacuum cleaner of world commodities that she may well crash
the world economy. With just property 36% of global steel and 55% of
global concrete. The house of cards of depression size is being
constructed as we speak.
