Incarnation
(The following article is intended for
adults; it should be read by children only
with parental guidance.)
.In Christian theology "Incarnation" is the name of
the doctrine that Jesus, a god, became the temporary
possessor of a human body. For an orthodox Christian
it is not enough to admire Jesus as a human being; one
is required to believe the proposition, "Jesus is God."
This is intended, moreover, to be what logicians call an
"identity claim;" it mea.ns that Jesus and God are identi-
cal, so that "Jesus is God" is no more true than "God is
Jesus." To the theologically uninitiated person this is
difficult to understand since we know that "Jesus" is the
name of a person who appeared on the human scene at
a certain time and departed from it a short while later,
whereas, we think of God as a being: who is both invis-
ible and eternal.
Christian theologians, however, explain to us that
rhe person we call Jesus was actually God in disguise.
This would have been fairly easy to understand but the
theologians complicated things by maintaining that
Jesus is to be regarded as; "God the Son," so that he
would not be confused with "God the Father." To ren-
der the matter still more unintelligible, it was laid down
as a divinely revealed truth incumbent on all Christians

to believe, that there was a mysterious third entity
named God the Holy Ghost.
Now you might think that if you have a Father and
a Son, there ought to be a Mother to round out the
picture, but no; the Holy Trinity, as it is called, is an
all-male establishment. Seems rather a shame in a way.
If there had been God the Father, God the Mother,
God the Son, and God the Daughter, we would have
had a well-balanced group that could have set an
inspiring: example in the area of family values, not to
mention the fact that later generations of feminists
would have. had less cause to complain. However, we
know that the task of theologians is not to tickle the
public fancy but to make known the truth, whatever
the cost may be.
About the Holy Trinity. One may ask if this means
there are three Gods. Is the Universe managed, not by
one God, but by a board of directors, a committee? The
theologians have an answer for this question and the
answer is: yes and no. That is, the three members of the
Trinity are three distinct persons but they are also one
and the same person. This kind of reasoning, which is
known as "theo-logic," can be understood only by the-
ologians: it is beyond the grasp of anyone else. The
Church, nevertheless, used to put people to death for
not believing it. If you said, "I don't understand how
three can add upi to only one," you would be told: "You
have to believe it before you can understand it."
Nevertheless, people are still trying to understand it.

and puzzles that theologians have been kept busy right
up to the present time trying to explain things. For ex-
ample, we are told that all three members of the Trin-
ity are eternal beings. This means that no one of them
can be older than. any of the others, and this means
that God the Son is of the same age as God the Father,
since God the Father could not have existed before
God the Son.
Here is another problem. The fact that Jesus is but
one member of the Trinity does not mean that he is
only one-third of a god; he is wholly and completely
God. It follows from this that there can be no divine
attribute that Jesus does not have and has not always
had. One of these attributes is, as you know, omnipres-
ence, and this raises a question. During that brief time
when God was disguised as a human being, was he
then spatially constricted to the body he was
occupying? If so, then he could not, during that time,
have been omnipresent and hence, while thus
embodied, he could not have been fully God. You may
never have spent any considerable time worrying about
this, but you may be sure that it has caused many
restless hours for theologians.
Among those who have grappled with this problem
is Dr. Robert L. Reymond, who at the time of writing
was a professor of Systematic Theology and Apologet-
ics at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis. Dr.
Reymond offers some of the fruit of his labors in the
Eangelical Dictionary of Theology, a thick and richly
informative book edited by Walter Elwell and pub-

lished in 1984 by Baker Book House. Dr. Reymon
addresses himself to the question I just raised: How
could God, while embodied as Jesus, have been om
nipresent? We must not suppose, he writes, that the
Son of God "was confined to the human body of Jesus
of Nazareth," for this would be "tantamount to con
tending that he who enfleshed himself as Jesus of
Nazareth. . . is not quite God." He reminds us that di
vine attributes are not "characteristics separate and dis
tinct from God's essence that he can set aside when he
desires." An "essence" in theological talk consists of
those properties of a thing: that are "essential" to its be
ing what it is. For example, an essential property- of:
triangle is having three sides; if it did not have this
property it would not be a triangle. Dr. Reymond
then, is saying here that omnipresence is an essential
property of God or, as he puts it, a property "belonging
to God's essence," and it is therefore not a characteristic
which, as he says, God "can set aside when he desires.'
No indeed. And being thus sternly forbidden to shed
even briefly his attribute of omnipresence, s. way must
be found for the Son of God to be wholly present in
the confines of a physical body while at the same time
wholly present throughout all space. Thus, during the
period of approximately zero to thirty A.D., we must
suppose that Jesus was present not only in Palestine but
also in New Guinea, southern Mexico, and the North
Pole) not to mention the bottom of the Atlantic and
the moons of Saturn. I suspect that Jesus might not
have been able to manage this without the assistance of

Dr. Reymond and his fellow theologians. I beg you not
to raise my crude question such as "How come the na-
tives of Africa were unaware of Jesus' presence a.t the
time?" Remember that we are dealing with spiritual
matters here and it behooves us to let spiritual authori-
ties deal with them.
Dr. Reymond now proceeds to enlighten us far-
ther. He cites the findings of the Council of Chal-
cedon, which met in 451 A.D. to consider this and
other issues, and "whose creedal labors," Dr. Reymond
states, "produced the Chriscological definitions that
fixed the boundaries for all future discussion." What we
learn to our advantage here, he explains, is that Jesus
was one person with two natures, a divine nature and a
human nature. Does this mean that Jesus has a dual
personality? Not at all, declares Dr. Reymond.
Nowhere in the Bible does Jesus refer to himself as
"we".
Only an intelligence of the highest order would be
capable of understanding the concept that Dr. Rey-
mond puts here before the reader. For instance, at some
point in time Jesus would have been eight years old, but
only with respect to his human nature; with respect to
his divine nature he had been alive for an. eternity be-
fore then. Yet it was the same Jesus who was both
eight years old and of the same age as his eternal Fa-
ther, and incalculably older than his non-eternal
mother. To speak thus of one person having two na-
tures may sound like double-talk to an unregenerate
person, but we must try to perceive these matters

through the eyes of faith and, as we have been told in
the case of other such mysteries, believe in order that
we may understand.
But a theologians work is never done. This Chal-
cedonian one-person-two'-natures doctrine (referred to
by theologians as the "hypostatic" doctrine) has under-
standably given rise to further questions. For example,
may we truly say of Jesus the one person, everything
that can be truly said of his two natures? (This is called
"the communication of attributes," or communicatio
idiomatum.) Thus it may be truly said of Jesus' human
nature that he was born, and of his divine nature that
he: was not born. Can both of these things be truly said
of the one person that Jesus is? If you find this confus-
ing, you can take comfort in the knowledge that the-
ologians themselves have not reached full agreement on
this question.
One matter on which orthodox theologians are
agree is that, being a god-man, one of Jesus' parents
had to be divine. I don't need to tell you which parent.
This, by the way, brings up a point of interest to all
feminists. When the Holy Trinity decided they wanted
to produce a human baby, they were apparently unable
to do so without the assistance of a woman, and it had
to be a human woman because there are no divine
women=97-theologically speaking, of course. This in
spite of the fact that omnipotence is one of the
"essential" attributes of divinity. The story we are told is
that Jesus was born out of wedlock, the result of what a
heathen might regard as an illicit union between God

the Father and a Jewish woman named Mary, thus
making Jesus a sort of divine *****, but at the same
time providing the necessary foundation for Christian
theology.
Not long after this version of the affair had been
agreed upon, it came to be recognized by the Church
Fathers that Mary could not have been completely hu-
man since she was miraculously freed of the Original
Sin that taints all other mortals. Why? Because oth-
erwise Jesus himself would have been infected with
Original Sin and this cannot be, since Jesus is God.
That Mary was born without this taint was, it was
agreed, the result of what was caviled "the Immaculate
Conception." In every other respect, however, Mary
had the characteristics of a normal human being.
What about Joseph? you may ask. Well, Mary's
husband Joseph was left out of the picture altogether.
This would seem to make Jesus inconceivable, yet we
know he was conceived. How? By what Dr. Reymond
calls a "virginal conception"=97-a very special case of
parthenogenesis. We must remember that with God all
things are possible, or at least nearly all things. Rey-
mond puts the matter as follows:
