THE CONTINUING EMBRYONIC STEM CELL DEBATE |

THE CONTINUING EMBRYONIC STEM CELL DEBATE
by Jerry Falwell
President Bush recently reiterated that he will veto congressional
legislation that topples his policies prohibiting taxpayer funding of
new embryonic stem cell research.
This promise came after the House approved a bill that would provide
federal funds to stem cell research programs that include the killing
of human embryos. The legislation is now headed to the Senate. The
House vote was 238-194, falling 50 votes shy of the two-thirds majority
necessary to override presidential veto.
"I would be vetoing the bill if it were to pass the United States
Senate," President Bush boldly stated. "There must be a balance
between science and ethics and I have made my decision. The use of
federal dollars to destroy life is something I simply do not
support."
The president's protection of life has been heartening to pro-life
Americans who appreciate his attempt to thwart the burgeoning American
culture of death.
The embryonic stem cell issue is a somewhat tricky one because
proponents of life must determine how to effectively defend microscopic
embryos that may seem, on the surface, to be insignificant. But if we
are to uphold the principle that life begins at conception, then even
this most nominal form of life must be protected.
The problem is that even some historically dependable pro-life
lawmakers have conceded funding for embryonic stem cell research -
research that would destroy the smallest forms of human life.
We therefore find ourselves at odds with some congressional leaders who
we are used to seeing in the foxholes next to us in the ongoing
pro-life battle. While it may seem easy to compromise on this issue, I
believe that is a terrible mistake.
"[Such compromise] is a perfect example of the hypocrisy that has
slowly infected many in the Republican Party and particularly those
claiming to be pro-life," said Judy Brown, president of American Life
League, never one to mince words. "Whether the innocent human being
is a few hours old or nine months old, an act that intentionally kills
him is always intrinsically evil. That this action is being taken for a
perceived 'good' is irrelevant; evil can never be justified."
In announcing his intent to veto new embryonic stem cell legislation,
President Bush took an effective course of action. He invited to the
White House several families that are comprised of children who were
adopted when they were still embryos.
President Bush stated, "The children here today remind us that there
is no such thing as a spare embryo. Every embryo is unique and
genetically complete, like every other human being. And each of us
started out our life this way. These lives are not raw material to be
exploited, but gifts."
Thank God that we have a president who - while some of his pro-life
colleagues have abandoned him - gallantly continues to be an intrepid
spokesman for life. He has not abandoned the cause in the face of
intense media scrutiny or condemnation from his political adversaries
on the left.
This president, who has never vetoed a bill, is using the power of his
office to defend life.
I, for one, appreciate him for taking such a heroic stand for those who
cannot defend themselves.
One final note on this issue. The National Right to Life Committee
(NRLC) points out that funding of human embryonic research is just the
tip of a larger iceberg.
NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson stated, "The biotechnology
industry ... [is] already seeking to create human embryos by cloning,
for the specific purpose of harvesting their parts for research."
That's the dire future that awaits our nation, specifically if we
allow Congress to dictate our national morality on this important
issue.

Of course, this it the president who has led the nation into a needless
war killing thousands of Iraqis and US soldiers. He's obviously
committed to "defend life".

That's the dire future that awaits our nation, specifically if we

And an even more dire future awaits us if people like Falwell and his
ilk gain control.

Weren't the republicans crowing about bush's 51% vote total being a
"mandate?" So how can he ignore a 55% vote in the house? I thought it
was "Majority Rules" in this country. How dare he ignore the will of the
majority!

Is the war in Iraq being privately funded by republican contributors?

Therefore war can never be justified, no matter how noble or just the
cause. I realize that this woman does not speak for the president, but I
am fairly certain that her group would have endorsed the bush/cheney
ticket, and most if not all of the members voted republican straight
across the board.

It's so comforting to know that our president is defending life. I
mean, except for largely ignoring Sudan...and Rwanda... And I guess
except for death-row inmates... And maybe Iraqi civilians and
insurgents and U.S. servicemen... And victims of handgun crimes...
And drunk driving victims... And cancer victims dying of second-hand
smoke...
This so-called culture of life is focused on small clots of
non-sentient cells, and ignores so many other threats to "life" that it
has become laughable. If this administration wants to leave a pro-life
legacy, maybe it should start caring about lives that we know are
living, loving, caring, functioning human beings. That doesn't seem to
be the way they operate, though. For some reason (someone please
explain it to me) they focus on the lab-fertilized ovum. *Naturally*
fertilized eggs don't marit the same support - I don't recall seeing
any mention of increased funding to research and prevent early-term
spontaneous miscarriages, for example.
I guess it's clear that the lives that might be saved by breakthroughs
brought about by stem-cell research are less important than sperm-laced
eggs, too.
The only conclusion I can come up with is that the administration is
playing this for political reasons, pandering to the religious right.
That's what this is about, isn't it? God vs. science. I am confident,
though, that the conservatives will eventually lose, because history
has shown us that whenever science goes toe to toe with superstition,
science wins. Science will win this one, too, but it's getting to be a
tougher fight, not because the science is any less compelling, but
because the godfolk feel like they're backed into a corner. They're
down to their last two or three battles - questions they believe
science hasn't answered yet: "Where did this all come from?", "When
does life start?", and "What happens when I die?". They're going to
fight like rats in a cage to keep from losing those battles. Witness
the evolution vs. ID debates and the Terry Schiavo story if you doubt
their resolve.
And all the while, George plays politics with them...
I love this *****.

Reckon you're right. Look at everything they've had to swallow in the last
few hundred years:
Astronomy deprived them of their proud place at the centre of the universe;
Evolutionary biology deprived them of their proud seat at the pinnacle of
'creation';
Philology and archaeology deprived them of their 'revealed' and 'inerrant'
holy book;
Comparative religion deprived them of the 'specialness' of their
belief-system...
Psychology deprived them of the proud illusion that their conscious minds
ruled their ideas and actions;
In that time, their
Jealous, interventionist and all-powerful Yahweh first dwindled to...
A mere 'watchmaker god' setting up a mechanical universe to run unaided;
then to...
A mere 'prankster god' reduced to inventing conundrums to 'test people's
faith'; then to...
A mere 'spiritual force' that is 'what all the great religions have been
getting at, really'; then to...
A mere phantasm from the chaos of the savage and infantile unconscious,
manufactured and manipulated into an agent of social control and a
marketable source of individual consolation -- just like all the other
'gods' in history...
Yup: they'll fight like rats in cages. And the more they begin to sense that
'the game's up' -- that the crushing weight of these unpalatable facts
*cannot be resisted* any longer -- the *more people they will kill*...
Katt.
