The Cryonics Society - Free eNewsletter Now Online |
The Cryonics Society is an organization working to educate the public
about the many potential benefits of cryonics to individuals and to our
society as a whole.
The Society also works to correct inaccurate and sensationalistic
presentations of cryonics in the media, and seeks to foster donations
and support which could advance scientific research in the cryonics
field.
Cryonics is an emerging medical technology which hopes to extend human
life by using methods involving extreme low temperature. Recently an
open letter signed by sixty prominient doctors, scientists and
researchers called for greater support for cryonics. (See
http://www.cryoletter.org).
After a long process of review, the U.S. Government has granted the
Cryonics Society 501c3 non-profit status. This means that any
contributions you may give to the Society to help its efforts are now
tax-deductible.
To learn more about the Cryonics Society, please enjoy a free look at
our free electronic newsletter at
http://www.cryonicssociety.org/enews/cs_enewsletter1_may2006.html. New
subscribers are welcome.
We want to advance science and possibly help save human lives. If you
would like to help too, or just to learn more about cryonics, then
please visit the Cryonics Society online at

Except of course that by law y'all can't freeze anyone until after
they die. And that there is no known way to revive someone frozen at
the temperatures cryonics uses. Of, and there's that nagging problem
of expanding ice crystals destroying just about every cell in the
body.

Cryonics has a long way to go, but those criticisms are rather
misleading. When a person is pronounced dead, nearly all the cells in
the body are still alive. Human cells used in tissue culture are
routinely frozen, stored in liquid nitrogen, and thawed in
laboratories--it's a common technique; destruction by ice crystals can
be prevented by use of cryoprotectants like glycerol. The challenge is
to do it in a whole animal.

Well, the molecules were in a specific state before death, it's not
impossible that future technologies could examine the wreckage, and
reverse-engineer molecules into that state again.
Unlikely, sure, but I don't think it's impossible. Since I am of the opinion
that humans and other living things are molecular machines, I see no reason
that broken machines can't be fixed.
An incredibly slim chance is better than no chance at all.
