Jailed paedophile Graham Capill has lodged an appeal against his
sentence on child sex offences.
The former Christian Heritage Party leader and police prosecutor was
sentenced in Christchurch District Court on July 14 to nine years for
sexual offences against three young girls.
Capill, 46, was sentenced to seven years in prison for rape, three
years for unlawful sexual connection to be served concurrently, and
two years for indecent assault. There is no minimum parole period.
Capill's appeal was lodged with the Court of Appeal in Wellington on
August 12.
NZPA understands his appeal is unlikely to be heard until next year,
as the court is almost fully booked for the remainder of this year.
Capill's Christchurch barrister Jonathon Eaton confirmed the appeal
was lodged on August 12.
He told NZPA the appeal was lodged on the grounds that Capill's
sentence "was manifestly excessive".
The earliest date he could expect for a hearing to be set down would
be the end of December.
"As I understand, they are fairly full for the rest of the year," Mr
Eaton said.
