The Fornication Culture
http://catholicanalysis.blogspot.com/2003/05/fornication-culture.html
In the April 2003 issue of Homiletic & Pastoral Review, I wrote an
article analyzing the predominant "Fornication Culture" in our society
and proposing the re-introduction of courtship focused on finding a
marriage partner as part of the solution to this disastrous situation.
Today's N.Y. Times reports the results of a study by a national
organization dedicated to preventing teen pregnancy that further
underlines the reach and extent of the fornication culture in the
United States.
Here are some noteworthy findings of that study which focuses on kids
age 12 to 14 during the nineteen nineties, with my comments in
parentheses:
1. About 20% of adolescents have had sexual intercourse before age 15
(this figure does not include oral sex which is apparently booming
among young teenagers);
2. About 18% of the sexually experienced in this group "drank
regularly" (the percentage who used alcohol in conjunction with sexual
intercourse, whether they drink regularly or not, must be much higher
than this);
3. About 43% of the sexually experienced used marijuana (again, it
would be interesting to know if marijuana use was part of the sexual
encounters);
4. 50% to 75% of the experienced 12 to 14 year olds used contraception
(well, with sex education beginning in 8th grade and earlier this is no
surprise, given that most sex education focuses on cramming as much
information about different methods of contraception as possible into
the minds of young teenagers, and, of course, there is no mention of
the obvious causal link between teaching contraception and encouraging
fornication);
5. 50% of 14 year olds attended "parties" with no adult supervision (in
my view, the adults are sending the message to these kids that adults
are as indifferent to their children's sexual experimentation as the
adults are to their own; the kids have heard the message);
6. One out of seven sexually experienced 14 year old girls has been
pregnant (proving that contraception is not the practical solution it
is proposed to be).
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy then proceeds to make
two recommendations: parents should discourage early one-on-one dating
and parents should be "very leery of significant age differences." The
study showed, as anyone with common sense could have immediately
testified to, that the greater the age difference between the boy and
the girl the more likely sexual intercourse would occur. As usual with
vapid organizations immersed in the conventional liberal mindset, there
is great effort to document what should be obvious to any parent who
cared to use common sense. As usual, the vapid recommendations will not
in any way solve the problem of teen pregnancy. The reason is that the
solution proposed by the secular mindset is that fornication is fine
and healthy as long as you don't do it too early. Well, if you are
willing and able and you are immersed in contraceptive information, why
wait? Given the premises of the secular culture, there is no reason to
wait. In fact, the secular culture approves of and encourages
fornication by rejecting the very concept of chastity. As a result,
kids recognize that the authority figures are arbitrarily drawing a
line that they are otherwise encouraged to cross as soon as possible as
a sign of their maturation. The secular proposal to young kids that
"sexual experimentation is fine, just wait a little longer" is not
persuasive. The kids recognize that a culture that rejects chastity
cannot draw any lines.
Instead of just discouraging early dating, our culture must question
any dating outside of courtship focused on finding a suitable spouse.
The solution to these problems is cultural, not the proliferation of
more brochures on contraception, much as the solution to many other
social problems, such as violence and crime, is fundamentally cultural.
The real problem is that the secular authority figures have nothing
cultural to propose to the young. A cultural approach that proposes
courtship, instead of dating, would take care of the problem with age
differences. With courtship, only two individuals ready for marriage in
the near future are focused on each other. With courtship, the goal is
a life-long partnership, not a game of exploitation by an older male,
as is far too common. In addition, the secular culture lacks
credibility when it comes to discouraging age diffferences because most
fornication involving older males preying on younger females is not
penalized even if it frequently crosses the line, as must be the case,
into statutory rape. In the average American high school, there must be
innumerable instances of statutory rape between older males and younger
females. Younger females and their families should go to the police
when an older male crosses the line. That is the most effective way to
put an end to the problem of age differences.
The lame solutions offered by this mainstream organization is similar
to the lame reaction of Monika Hellwig, the President of the
Association of Catholic Colleges & Universities, when confronted with
data showing that students in Catholic colleges were losing their
Catholic beliefs while attending those colleges. And, of course, loss
of belief in chastity as a moral value was a prime outcome noted in
that recent survey of Catholic colleges. Her response to this terrible
situation was to repeat the liberal mantra that Catholic colleges
should not "lock students into rules" and instead should teach
"critical thinking." Like the National Campaign to Prevent Teen
Pregnancy, Hellwig can contribute nothing effective to the solution of
the problem. Even worse, Monika Hellwig, a Catholic theologian who
recently put forth a second edition of a book purporting to explain
Catholicism to the public, is clueless about the message of authentic
Catholicism that chastity is indeed the most sorely needed type of
critical thinking for young people.

You'd think, reading this, that conservatives didn't have sex; or, when
they did, it was always missionary position, in the confines of
marriage, and always open to conception.
However, when you read the stories in the newspapers - the various
scandals, many of them involving well-known conservative figures - you
realize that this is just a falsehood, and that "fornication" happens
all along the political spectrum.
Divorce and teen-age pregnancies are both lower in the Blue States, as
it happens.

Homiletic & Pastoral Review? Is that peer-reviewed?

Maybe you are, finally, on to something...
You know, it's a rare situation where a child engages in sexual
experimentation when parents are around to supervise. Maybe one of the big
problems isn't "Liberal Society" but "Parental Abdication." And the devout
Christians in my town are abdicating about as much as any other group.
We've got a lot of two-income families here. They'd rather buy a bigger
house in which to isolate their children from each other than have a parent
stay home and teach the children to get along.
You might take a look at this:

Then again, you might not. Information is a little dangerous. Ideas are
doubly so.
