Object: The Great Flood!
No, not that bible fable stuff.
About a week ago, we on the Gulf Coast (Louisiana, Mississippi, Talabama,
and FloriDUH! all got hammered. Pensacola got almost as much rain in 12
hours as Hurricane Ivan dumped on us. My little storage cellar had several
pounds of leaves in it after the hurricane, but was pretty much bone-dry
even though I'd left the doors open. After last week's marathon, I found
maybe 4 inches of water in there (but my kayak was bone-dry).
I immediately started thinking out how I was going to get the water out of
there with the least effort, and settled on a small bilge pump, 10 feet of
hose, and an old computer power supply. Didn't build it right away, though.
Yesterday, we saw another big-***** storm system. Around 7 p.m. the rain was
coming down by the bathtub load (no paltry bucket-loads, here). Rained
pretty much all night, but the heaviest downpour was in the early evening.
I built my little bilge pump this evening and went to get it set up...and
found more than a foot of water in the cellar!
The last time I saw it that deep in there, I was 12 years old (never you
mind how long ago that was) and my father set me to helping him bail it out
with buckets--which is why I wanted to do something more in keeping with my
lazy nature this time around ;p
Is it genius? Is it folly? Will our hero conquer the tides, or merely burn
out a power supply?
Tune in tomorrow for...AS THE PUMP TURNS!

Update:
In 90 minutes, assuming the 35 gallons-per-hour figure is right, it's
pumped about 52.5 gallons out of there--enough to drop the water level
4 inches. That's about 183 gallons of rainwater from 2 different storm
systems!
Once it's empty, I get to do the less-pleasant part: finding out what's
been damaged by all the standing water. I don't expect any miracles ;p

My garbage pickup company sent us all a new larger recycling container,
and picked up all the little green ones. Except mine, I forgot to put it
out, so I still have it. The lid has been off it for about 8 months,
thus the can has been open for all of Los Angeles' usually non-existent
rainy season. The can is almost full of water, and it stands about as
tall as my hips.
I've told a few Seattle people, who are having a draught year, that
anytime they'd like to come on down here and pick up some of this fucking
water, we'd really appreciate it.

We've had a ridiculous amount of flooding in my neck of the woods (northern
NJ) since last weekend. I drove by the Passaic River in Parsippany (Route
46) earlier today and damn! That river is high! And right now it's pouring
outside. I feel sorry for people that live in the flood zones. They're
more than a bit screwed :(

I've been seeing a lot of flooded businesses in the last week. One place--
an indoor skateboarding park--has a loading dock with an angled pit for
trucks to back into. The entire lot was flooded after last week's 24-hour
rain that the truck box floor was under water for maybe 2 feet of its
length. This is like one of those Ryder or other rental trucks where the
box deck is about 4 feet high. They got pasted again last night. There's a
small animal hospital that's got several inches of clean-up to do.

The Passaic river always floods. Even in a moderate rainy season. The
road that I used to take from where I lived in Lincoln Park to work in
Fairfield was always under water. Then a ten minute drive could easily
become 45 min. or longer as I had to find a way around the floods.

I used to shop at Willowbrook. Two Bridges Road was the one that always
flooded. Now I haven't been there in 15 years, but that used to be a
pretty nice section of New Jersey except when it flooded. I lived on a
little hill so the water didn't affect my condo, but it sure messed up
getting around.

Nah, the pump was as effective as Jesus. :)

It worked fine, down to about 1/2" of water left. I was willing to leave it
at that.
Then, 24 hours after I got it pumped out that far, I found 4" of standing
water in there again. Pumped that out...and this morning, 4" of standing
water again.
SO. I've added a float switch and 100 feet of garden hose. Now the pump
will kick in without me needing to be there--and the water goes into the
big storm drain cutting through the back yard. It's ON!

would think to utilize one in that manner.

The water level went all the way back up to 14" after the rain Monday
night.
The pump is completely under water and going as hard as it can--and it only
started making a dent sometime this morning. Getting it out to the storm
drain did the trick (for now).
The last time this happened, according to my stepfather he had to bucket
the thing out several times. Me, I'm not that patient *g*
