It was on June 14 (Flag Day; probably not coincidental), 1954,
when "under God" was added to it. Probably innocently, since there
was nothing like the loathsome RRR Cult that infests America today
in existence back then to try to force their "values" down everyone's
throat -- regardless of their faith, or lack thereof.
The biggest problem back then (and ever since) with its recitation
thereafter was that the additional words interrupted its previously
smooth flow, making it sound awkward and stilted. Thus, for the 52
years that have followed, I've always favored the 1924 wording --
just for that reason, and out of no desire to be insulting toward God.
Today, we have an additional problem: a pledge, and money,
which obviously ENDORSES the recognition of God... being imposed
upon tens of millions of Americans for whom that in inapplicable.
In fairness to society in general, we should strictly observe the
separation of church and state and drop those endorsements.
Keeping in mind the fact that the sky never fell BEFORE they were
emplaced... and that America has not been any better off SINCE
they were. I doubt if God would be slighted. After all, His existence
and the allegiance to Him that pertains on the part of His believers
is firmly emplaced already in all of our hearts. And those who don't
believe in Him are free to do so or not, case-by-case.

A short while after one round of this argument came up I watched part of
"The Bells of St Mary's"
A 1940's film with Bing Crosby as a catholic priest, nuns, children, etc.
One scene showed these people reciting the pledge and god was no mentioned
at all.
Of course religion had a part in both the catholic elementary and high
school I went to but it was 99.99% in the religion class. In high school it
was a short period 2 or 3 times a week with a much more valuable speech
class 3 or 2 times a week. It didn't enter into any other class.

Although the exact figures may be impossible to derive, the
probability that abortion-on-request has SIGNIFICANTLY benefitted
all of America's society in terms of the crime rate and the economy
is QUITE strong, despite the temporary anomaly caused by the attack
on Sept. 11, 2001. And a strong U.S. economy benefits the entire
