Everybody hates spray painters -- but whip children? Is that more
of that "Family Values" I've been reading so much about?

There again, I tend to believe society would be better off if corporal
punishment were reintroduced. That's nothing to do with being Christian in
itself. Of course, I wouldn't necessarily want to see children being
whipped - that's disproportionate. Not sure I'd have bits cut off people
for graffiti, either. But then I'm probably insane.
Incidentally, 'republidiot' isn't a very good word. It's a bit, well,
contrived. A bit awkward.

Singapore metes out corporal punishment. A few years ago, an
American was publicly caned (I believe for vandalizing a car.).
Just thought you might have heard of it.

I hadn't. But now I have. Tell me: has the American in question shown an
inclination to vandalise any more cars in Singapore?

I suspect not :-) But try http://www.corpun.com/sgju9403.htm for more

Also, the caning wasn't public. Oops.

My personal jury's out on the humiliation thing. It seems fairly clear
that since one of any animal's most basic instincts is to avoid pain
(except under rather specific circumstances, of course.. :o) ), the mere
inflicting of pain - with proper medical supervision and aftercare,
obviously - should in itself make an effective deterrent in most cases. I
tend to wonder if humiliating someone won't simply make them resent you
even more and therefore increase their will to resist you.
Besides, we're always banging on about being 'humane'. And as far as I can
see corporal punishment is far more humane than a custodial sentence.
After all, which is the more unreasonable way to punish someone for an
offence of, say, theft: a few moments of pain or to be deprived of liberty
for months or years? I know if I were to fall foul of the law I'd consider
the latter by far the more brutal punishment.

But one could argue that the publicity, while not deterring the convict,
might deter members of the audience.

Perhaps so. Perhaps so. But the knowledge that it will happen may well be
enough to do that. And if it isn't enough, well, the sentence doesn't cost
the state much, after all. Without having to worry about overcrowding in
cramped prisons, the state can play silly buggers as long as the criminal
decides he or she wants to.

I can imagine. Actually that was often the way here, too: the idea of
running to my parents, as kids so often do today, to protect me from a
teacher or (hypothetically!) a police officer would never have occurred to
me. Why would they defend me for doing something wrong? They wanted me to
grow up with a sense of responsibility, after all.

Extend that "logic" to it's end, and it arrives at execution for any
crime whatsoever, as a guaranteed method to stop recidivism.
I wouldn't mind if it only applied to politicians...

That is a logical conclusion, although I concede it is a little extreme.
I would tend to apply execution (and apply it I would) not primarily as
deterrence, and certainly not as vengeance, but solely as a means of those
judged to be a continuing threat to the safety of others. Specifically, I
would apply the death penalty to four major crimes: murder (including what
is now judged 'manslaughter' in Britain if the death is the result of any
act of deliberate aggression), rape, kidnap and burglary - all of which can
have a devastating, life-changing effect on their victims.
You will be pleased to note I do not intend to run for Prime Minister.

Wise move.
You'd need a much more rabidly violent stance to get elected.
And, it seems, you need to be deluded to the point of insanity,
hearing "Gods" inform you to get others to commit genocide for you,
and having a wife who is so loopy that she even believes in tarot, and
the Guardian's stories!
Nope, you have no chance with such a moderate platform...

As the Mayor, he is personally responsible for much of the deliberate
painting of public property, spray or otherwise.
Which bits of him should be cut off?
