Object: The movie "Cheyenne Autumn"
I was given a copy of the old movie called "Cheyenne Autumn" which I
finally got to view after getting my VCR player fixed. For the past
month or so I've been listening to audio tape cassetts which cover
the difficult Navajo language so when I watched the movie, I was very
surprised when the "Cheyenne" Indians spoke -- since they were speaking
Najavo.
But what was real surprising was what the Indians were saying when
they were talking to the white invaders through interpreters. I don't
know Navajo at all well but beyond any doubt when a fort's commanding
officer is introduced to some Indians who had appeared at the fort to
see if the US government would meet their latest treaty (they didn't)
the Indian speaking Navajo _distinctly_ says that the commanding
officer has a penis the size of a rabbit.
I ***** you not.
In other parts where the "Cheyenne" speak Navajo, though I don't know
exactly what they're saying, it's never anything to do with the actual
English translation. And I think it's inside jokes, and almost always
it's about someone's penis.
I wonder if anyone else has ever noticed this.

No one else but you was looking INTO this, Fred. I'll bet you sleep in

But Denis, the Mexican Jesus has CANDY inside Him; the American
version just scowls at you. There's no contest.

A penis the size of a rabbit? That would be HUGE. Counting the feet
and the head? Would it have pink eyes and floppy ears?

You know, my Pop told me the same thing - that he had enjoyed Cheyenne
Autumn, that they had to use actors from other tribes, due to a
shortage of actual Cheyenne, and that he got a kick out of the idea
that the Indian actors were making up obscene insulting stuff for their
speaking parts.
How he knew this, I don't know - I don't think he speaks the lingo. I
had assumed he was repeating urban legend.

That's a John Ford movie.
Knowing some of the John Ford legend, if Ford coulda gotten away with
dialogue concerning miniscule tallywhackers in ENGLISH, I believe he woulda.

Amusing, isn't it? I think Ricardo Montumbam (sp?) was just speaking
gibberish, not Spanish or some other tribal language, but there were
definately a number of people speaking Navajo, al of whom were giving
obscene comments that were unrelated to the "English translation." }:-}
I wonder what Navajos think about the movie. They must laugh every
time they see it -- at least some of the parts.
