'WIN-WIN': China no longer casts itself as a humiliated victim of
aggressive powers, but as a great diplomatic power in its own right

Issues 2004 - The Chinese diplomat is chatting over coffee at
Starbucks in Beijing. He's well briefed, bilingual and moves
seamlessly from current to ancient empires, noting that Ming-dynasty
emigrants arrived in the Malaysian port of Melaka hundreds of years
ago, but not as colonizers. China offered Malays trade and defense
assistance. "I'm not a big expert in the motivation of Chinese
emperors," says the diplomat, smiling, "but their foreign ambitions
weren't so grand. That helps us gain the trust of Southeast Asian
nations today; it helps get our message across."
