The NYT completes sellout to Red America |
"NEW YORK An internal committee at The New York Times has recommended
steps to increase readers' confidence in the newspaper, including
reducing errors, increasing coverage of religion, "rural areas"
and "middle America," making reporters and editors more accessible,
and possibly starting a blog."

Swell. Just what we need to increase our confidence in the NYT is
more religious news. We fondly await the day when the NYT
announces that it will scale back it's coverage of religion to
better concentrate on real issues.
Then again, maybe it depends on the coverage. Sex scandals in the
clergy, waste of federal money on "faith initiatives", fleecing of
the IRS by TV evangelists, et hoc genus omni -- I could go for that,
I guess.

Of the three Popes, John the Twenty-third was the first
victim: he fled and was brought back a prisoner: the
most scandalous charges were suppressed: the Vicar of
Christ was only accused of piracy, murder, rape, sodomy,
and incest. _Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire_, Gibbon

It's the **NEW YORK** Times. If they want to start a new newspaper for the
IQ-challenged parts of the country, then do so. As long as your paper has
New York in its title, its responsibility is for New York, not Kansas or
Tennessee. That's like opening a St Louis paper and getting nothing but
news from the Sudan and New England.

That's a great idea, if they want to lose even more circulation.

It might surprise you that people in Kansas and Tennessee buy the paper. And
there are a few enlightened New Yorkers who would like to hear about the
outside world. Even places like Sudan, or Kansas.
That's like opening a St Louis paper and getting nothing but

No, it's like opening a paper in St. Louis, and in addition to news about
St. Louis, you include news about Sudan and New England. Maybe the folks
there would like to know what they can do about the genocide in Darfur, and
also get information about places to visit in Boston.
