Why is evolution constantly under attack by fundamentalists?
1. Difficult to reconcile eons of evolution with a "loving" gawd.
2. Conflicts with the Biblical descriptions of creation in Genesis.
3. Conflict invalidates the concept of a divine error-free Bible.
4. A lack of Adam or Eve throws doubt on the doctrine of Original Sin.
5. A lack of Original Sin brings the redemption of Jesus into doubt.
How true. The thing that many people don't truly understand is that
even if scientists were to somehow to able to 'prove' beyond a shadow
of a doubt that a deity did *not* 'create' man and the universe, it
wouldn't make one bit of difference. Fundamentalists are, for all
intents and purposes, mentally retarded people. (Or as close to being
mentally retarded as one can get.) So what the scientists say doesn't
really mean 'squat' to them. What makes them so repugnant to the
thinking man and woman is the fact that they are forever spreading
their mental illness to the most vulnerable among us - children and
people with deep psychological problems. And truth be told, there is
no way of stopping them from spreading their malicious 'disease' at the
present time. The President and key members of his cabinet, as well
as a significant number of members of Congress are themselves afflicted.
I'm afraid that we liberals are in for a rough time for the time being.
The ball is now in the fundamentalist's 'corner.' We're just going to
have to learn to live with it - unfortunately.
The sad thing is that I have to disagree with one of your points above.
Some very intelligent people can and do believe and occasionally even
promote these absurd ideas. Whether this is due to a psychological
weakness or internal conflict or a paranoid fear for their children's
safety or an echo of their own childhood conditioning or perhaps some
traumatic emotional event in their lives I do not know.
