The papacy - the last absolute monarchy in Europe |
The papacy is actually an antiquated form of government that Europeans
spent centuries of grief doing away with. It is really the last
absolute monarchy in Europe. The Vatican is a real state and the pope
is an elected king. The pope has a ring of a ruler, headgear that
could be a crown, a bureaucracy called the curia, robes, a throne, a
palace, an army, a central bank, a nobility in the form of a college
of cardinals, a regal court and a state religion. The king has a
divine right to rule.
Yet there is not only obedience and submission to the pope/king but
worship. Yet Catholics who enjoy and support largely secular
democratic states and would agree agree to a system of governance like
the Vat's and who disagree with most of the pope's rulings and who
disregard completely the church's ruling on contraception are still in
awe of the institution of the papacy and the pope.

A long time ago, I read that the RCC was organized along the lines of
the Roman empire. With the pope as emperor, of ciurse.
Yet there is not only obedience and submission to the pope/king but
worship. Yet Catholics who enjoy and support largely secular

And a government where the leader's rulings can't be questioned because
the leader is infallible. `I wonder how many Catholics know that the
Pope only became infallible as late as1870 when Pius IX declared himself
to be so.

Yup. Historically highly interesting, isn't it? A living piece of
antiquity that I will most definitely have to visit when finances
and timing allow.
Yet there is not only obedience and submission to the pope/king but

Actually, pope is definitely not worshipped.

The institution has 2000 years of history, tradition and respect.
Heck, even I stand in respect of St. Peter's throne, though as lapsed
Protestant I most definitely remember *why* certain German theologician
hammered 95 theses to church door in 1517.

Mildly oxymoronical.

So do all religious leaders. It doesn't make them monarchs.

Not really. The "Holy Roman Emperor" was likewise "elected". But
only a few noblemen were the "electors".
The pope has a ring of a ruler, headgear that
could be a crown, a bureaucracy called the curia, robes, a throne, a

No, not by itself. But the other features like diplomatically
recognized sovereignty and no accountability to the people
themselves makes it a bit more extreme than constitutional
monarchies. In the case of the pope, his powers are certainly more
than ceremonial, whereas most other european monarchs have been
reduced to absolute figureheads.
Yet there is not only obedience and submission to the pope/king but
worship. Yet Catholics who enjoy and support largely secular
democratic states and would agree agree to a system of governance

the Vat's and who disagree with most of the pope's rulings and who

Yeah.
The next question would be "Why?", followed by "How do we depose the
*****?"
