The so-called "election" of a pope |
I know that Catholics love to believe that there is actually an
"election" held for a pope. But all the "electors" were hand picked
by the last pope and they basically rubberstamped his hand picked
successor. This is even more screwed up than an repug run election
in Iraq or Florida.

I'm "with" Duke on this one -- Democracy was never the point of the
Catholic church, and the idea is to circumvent the effects of papal
mortality as much as possible by allowing a pope to influence his
successor.

It follows logically from the idea that god selected the first pope and
that, just as that was not a single event, the selection process would
continue to be from god.
"Catholics believe that the Holy Spirit of God selects the Pope through the
Cardinals who will gather in Rome. And it is only God who can end the Pope's
term of office which God did today. "
-Father James A. Miceli, Pastor, St. Mary's Catholic Church
This catholic belief only stems from after Pope St. Gregory VII who made the
cardinals the electors rather than the people.

Nope - that's illogical. Christ told his apostles (12 men) to go forth and
baptize all nations and teach them what he Jesus taught them until he returns.
Then he left for vacation.
In order to so approach the entire world, men had to replace men by voting for
other men. Matthias was chosen by lot to replace Judas. And so it continues.

And that's fine. I don't have a problem with that presentation.

Earl forgets that we are talking about the pope. According to the RCC the
first pope was appointed by Christ. To not be familar with this shows
either forgetting or an even poorer job done in his after school classs.
