THE SPECTRE OF CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALISM IS VERY FRIGHTENING

The three primary orthodox religions, Christianity, Moslem and Judaism, are
fascistic.
Those who exert pressure for a theocracy will soon have state power, and
George Orwell's 1984
will become fact. The nation's police forces and the military are in the
camp of fundamental
Christianity, with all of the prudishness of the Puritans. We will be back
to the dark ages, with a
new implement of torture, job security. As the pendulum swings to the right,
there will be
greater pressure for non-theists to conform, and they will be used as
scapegoats as the Jews were
in Nazi Germany, even though their numbers were few. Just for that reason —
lack of power —
minority groups will be branded as pariahs. There is hardly a politician who
is not afraid of
Christian fundamentalism. Politics and religious orthodoxy will be a classic
example offollie a
deux, only it will befolie a millions. In order not to be condemned by the
vociferous religious
right, politicians will have to vote for stupid and insane laws. If not in
my lifetime — I'm
seventy years old — then in the near future. Young lawyers graduating from
Pat Robertson's
now accredited law school will be the future judges and attorneys who will
kill the Bill of Rights
and the Constitution for their Bible-based morality. And don't forget these
fundamentalists are
the ones who are going to interpret the Bible to suit their agenda.
