The Twilight of Atheism |
The Twilight of Atheism, by ex-atheist Alister McGrath looks like an
excellent book. It was just recommended to me. Here is a description (

In this bold and provocative new book, the author of In the Beginning
and The Reenchantment of Nature challenges the widely held assumption that
the world is becoming more secular and demonstrates why atheism cannot
provide the moral and intellectual guidance essential for coping with the
complexities of modern life. Atheism is one of the most important movements
in modern Western culture. For the last two hundred years, it seemed to be
the verge of eliminating religion as an outmoded and dangerous superstition.
Recent years, however, have witnessed the decline of disbelief and a rise in
religious devotion throughout the world. In THE TWILIGHT OF ATHEISM, the
distinguished historian and theologian Alister McGrath examines what went
wrong with the atheist dream and explains why religion and faith are
destined to play a central role in the twenty-first century. A former
atheist who is now one of Christianity's foremost scholars, McGrath traces
the history of atheism from its emergence in eighteenth-century Europe as a
revolutionary worldview that offered liberation from the rigidity of
traditional religion and the oppression of tyrannical monarchs, to its
golden age in the first half of the twentieth century. Blending thoughtful,
authoritative historical analysis with incisive portraits of such leading
and influential atheists as Sigmund Freud and Richard Dawkins, McGrath
exposes the flaws at the heart of atheism, and argues that the renewal of
faith is a natural, inevitable, and necessary response to its failures. The
Twilight of Atheism will unsettle believers and nonbelievers alike. A
powerful rebuttal of the philosophy that, for better and for worse, has
exerted tremendous influenceon Western history, it carries major
implications for the future of both religion and unbelief in our society.

So ... you're going to in turn recommend a book that you haven't read?

It looks like an excellent book? So you haven't read it, is that what
you're saying?
It was just recommended to me. Here is a description...
I'll snip that out, Jason. It's a copyright violation to post it without
permission, and we all know how strongly you feel about such things. In
fact, I am quite certain you will be retracting the post and apologizing
once you realize you did that. Am I right?
[Snip]
Now that that's out of the way, I have a question. A couple of weeks
back, during what appears to be the only response you could muster to me,
you told me that if I did some research in Google, which "doesn't lie," as
you said, I'd find the answers to all of those complaints about you and
you were quite sure they would be adequate. I'm afraid I am not satisfied
at all, and so I'd like to start with one of the earlier complaints that I
don't feel you have ever addressed adequately.
One of your tactics was apparently to purchase domain names that were and
are very similar to those owned by organizations and persons with
whom you have diametrically opposed opinions and
beliefs--theatheistnetwork, talkorigin, and so forth. These domains sat
over redirects to your ministry web site(s), so the unwary surfer looking
for some specific content would, instead, find himself or herself looking
at your rather amateurishly designed ministry sites instead of content
that they intended to see. This strikes me as a very dishonest thing to do
and it is a tactic more commonly thought to be that of a porn merchant
than even an alleged and self-described minister of the Gospel. On your
advice, I looked to see if you ever provided a reasonable and acceptable
explanation for this, and I'm just not finding it.
You should understand that I'm taking your advice. Google has the
answers, you said, and it "doesn't lie." Well, I'm not finding the
answers. The closest thing I'm finding *anywhere* is some vague statement
that it was a "business decision." I guess I would wonder what sort of
business decision and what purpose was served by having an alleged
Christian minister use what appear to be deceptive tactics in an apparent
attempt to divert traffic to his own site while presuming to keep people
from seeing the content the sites with which you don't happen to agree and
with whom you even had some dispute.
Google doesn't seem to have the answer. Perhaps I'm just not finding it.
You can help by simply pointing me to the link at Google that shows you
providing a perfectly reasonable and honest explanation for this behavior.
I'm a reasonable fellow, I don't expect you to repeat yourself. A link
to the explanation will be fine.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Like it or hate it, the world IS becoming more secular. And will
continue that way. What you do is fight a rear guard action, or more
precisely: a loosing battle.
