Object: The world will end
This is not religion. This is a scientific fact. Whether it's by the
impact of an astero=EFd, the death of our sun, or some other mayor event
the planet we live on and all life on it will come to an end. The human
race will be whipped off the face of the Earth if we stay put. So what
do we do?
Do we stay and hope some devine intervention comes and rescues us? Or
do we go ahead with science and try to find solutions ourselves? My
stance is with the latter and that we should try to spread life from
the Earth to save it. If we don't, then nothing of what we do or say
matters since all is lost anyway.

To be pedantic, the most probable death would be by slow
broiling, or fast broiling if we don't take care of global
warming, but even if we were to somehow compensate for the
increased CO2, the sun's insolation will increase until its
deathpoint, at which point it will bloat up nicely into a
red ball, either swallowing Earth (making most issues moot)
or frying it (because of the proximity of its relatively
cool surface).
Think warm thoughts this winter festival season. :-)
The good news is that we don't have to worry until about
AD 499,999,999 or thereabouts -- because of the insolation,
mostly; the Sun won't turn blood-colored until AD 4,699,999,999
or so. But it will be a little uncomfortable even before then.
My guess is that at some point we'll start harnessing
asteroids to orbit the Earth, and build gigantic space
stations. Water will be hoisted to these stations to be
used as propellant, fuel, and of course the usual things
such as washing (by that time NASA or equivalent will have
figured out the station's ecosystem).
At the appropriate time, some of the water will be expelled
to travel to Mars (heck, some of the water's been used
already to slow the danged asteroids *down*) -- or at
least into a rather lonely orbit a little farther out.
(It's not clear how much hard radiation is generated when
the nuclear cycle of a star the size of our Sun switches
from hydrogen to helium. Let's hope we know by then.)
No doubt churches will be built on those stations, too (grumble),
but at least humanity will survive in some form -- until the
Sun becomes a white dwarf and starts to cool, and the fuel,
presumably hydrogen, runs out on the stations.
If we're very lucky the stations might be able to harvest
the solar wind for more hydrogen and continue to run at
a very low power level, but they'll be stuck in orbit for
awhile, and the solar wind will eventually cease, as the
Sun has run out of hydrogen and helium to power the nuclear
furnace, and becomes "dark matter" -- along with a good
portion of its stellar neighbors, and the aforementioned
space stations. The air and water will then freeze, and
one can take one's choice of a decompressive blowout from
the water bursting the pipes, or hypothermia. The good
news there is that hypothermia occurs first, and one can
envision bulkheads to contain the explosions, if we
plan far enough ahead.
Not that it'll matter; the center of the station will get
very crowded. And we'll all go together when we go...
There is the faint possibility of some rather nightmarish
evolutionary trends, somewhat a la _The Time Machine_,
although the specifics are quite lacking and I doubt H. G.
Wells got it even close to right -- though it's a reasonably
good guess AFAICT. This of course makes for an obvious
station moniker: The Rabbit Hutches. :-)

My point is that it's in science and technology any hope to save
life,as it is and has been on Earth. Not in Religion. If stay sitting
on our butts waiting for some devine intervention time will catch us
and nothing will be left. Religion however tries to put a break on this
and even sabotage scientific research in order to preserve itself. If
they have their way, the annihilation of life on Earth is certain
without any chance of escape. And then of course any morality is
irrelevant. A paradox? If however science and technology are allowed to
progress then our behaviour and conduct are relevant since those that
come after us need to learn from it and progress even further
indefinitely.
If however we do choose for the conservative path, religion. Then there
will be no legacy, no memory. Life on Earth will end. That does not
mean the end of life however. As we speak new stars and planets are
forming. And on some of those planets the same chemecal processes that
produced life here on earth are occuring.

That is not exactly what Tervicz is saying
He doesn't mean our individual death (which is obvious)
he means the extinction of the species (homo sapiens sapiens)
It is wothwhile considering wether we can/should prevent this
extiction,
which - without space-travel - seems inevitable.
Of course even with space-travel we might become extinct,
but It may make a few billion years difference.
He is in fact proposing the natural equivalent for "eternal life".
