Genes Show Signs Brain Still Evolving
WASHINGTON -- The human brain may still be evolving. So suggests new
research that tracked changes in two genes thought to help regulate
brain growth, changes that appeared well after the rise of modern
humans 200,000 years ago.
That the defining feature of humans _ our large brains _ continued to
evolve as recently as 5,800 years ago, and may be doing so today,
promises to surprise the average person, if not biologists

Young, you are so confused, do you still believe in MumboJumbo, or are
you
starting to understand science?

We'll write to tell you what it's like when we get there.

What good is a brain, when the "neocons'" heads are firmly
implanted up thier asses?

Genes Show Signs Brain Still Evolving
Of course we're still evolving. Is this really shocking to anyone?
That the defining feature of humans _ our large brains _ continued to
evolve as recently as 5,800 years ago, and may be doing so today,

Gee, I wonder why the average person is so ignorant to be surprised.
Couldn't be the nutjobs trying to push their myths in public schools.

The article is at
<http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2005/09/08/national/a140147D00.DTL&hw=brain&sn=001&sc=1000>
It claims:
"Using DNA samples from ethnically diverse populations, they
identified a collection of variations in each gene that
occurred with unusually high frequency. In fact, the
variations were so common they couldn't be accidental
mutations but instead were probably due to natural selection,
where genetic changes that are favorable to a species quickly
gain a foothold and begin to spread, the researchers report."
"Other scientists urge great caution in interpreting the
research."
It is an interesting result if correct, and the surprising thing is
the possibility of directly measuring something related to evolution
of the human brain.

Don't you know that the planet is "only 6000 years old"?

This will surprise no one except right wing religious nutters, and
they'll simply deny it. It's "EVILution", after all. <G>
