Object: Things that make you appreciate life
So there I was, minding my own business waiting for the bus to take me
to work. I just wanted Friday to be over. I had gone out on a romantic
date with my wife the night before, and I was anxious to get back to her.
The next thing I know, I hear a sound behind me. I turn and a small
black car with two people in it is some twenty feet from me, and not
slowing down. I dive to my right to get as much of me out of the way as
possible, my left leg however didn't get the memo.
They hit me, then the car parked about 10 feet behind me, hard enough to
push it out of it's parking space, then they hit the wall of the deli at
the end of the strip mall in the parking lot where I had been standing.
I was no where near the street when this happened. The little pricks
had to squeeze their car between a sign post for the strip mall and the
bus stop trash can. They missed the trash can, but clipped the sign
post. Naturally, the little bastards ran. Witnesses stated it was two
young white boys, who grabbed a radio from the car before they bolted away.
Here's the part that pisses me off the most. There are no skid marks
anywhere, till just in front of the deli wall where the car finally
stopped. These little fuckers didn't even try to slow down.
Fortunately, they hit me, and not the mother and her infant that were
actually waiting in the bus stop.
So, now I sit here at home, trapped in the lower level of the house as
we have stairs and I'm on crutches for the time being. My left leg is
not too bad, but the brace and all are making life a right royal pain in
the ***** right now. I hate it when people have to wait on me for any
reason, and now my wife has to be my care giver and take care of her
father as well.
I do however find the good in all of this. When I heard the noise, it
was them hitting the sign post, I turned. I was lined up dead center in
there hood at that moment, and like I said, they were not slowing down.
The car they hit after hitting me was only about 10 feet behind me. If
I had froze, they would have slammed into me squarely, and carried me
into that other car. I would not be writing this note now if I had not
moved and moved quickly.
The cops, firefighters, and hospital staff all praised me for having,
"cat like reflexes" and reminding me of how much worse it could have
been. I also get to experience the high life for a while, Oxycodone
makes the pain bearable and allows me to get some sleep. I also
discovered that female Phoenix Firefighters are fine. Obviously the
same high standards of good looks they make the men adhere to also apply
to the women.
BTW, I remember explicitly what went through my mind as all this was
happening. "MOVE!" came first. Then, when I realized I'd been hit, a
two word phrase involving sexual contact and my maternal parent sprang
from my lips. I was *****. Still am actually. But I know just
how damned lucky I am to be alive right now. Phoenix has some of the
worst statistics for vehicle / pedestrian accidents in the country. I
won't be added to this years list of statistics in the fatality column.
And it looks like we might actually get a second vehicle out of all
this now. The Quaker does not want me riding the bus any longer. Her
dad was hit twice last year, and I can understand her reasons.
Of course, when she showed up at the hospital, she went immediately into
care giver mode and started answering all questions for me, just as if I
were her dad. I finally handed her my cell phone and told her to go out
side and call my boss. She got the hint. Love her to death, but
sometimes I think she's been taking care of that 6'6" 5 year old for far
too long. He's going to be 82 here in a few weeks, and he's mighty glad
I'm still around to celebrate that birthday with him.
And to all you fundy fruitcakes out here, no. No I didn't call out to
any gods, no I didn't see my life flash before my eyes, and no, I have
not changed my mind.
Sorry for the long rant, just had to get this down.

Isn't it funny how Jesus/God always "intervenes" just that little bit
too late? I mean, he could have dematerialised all the gas out of the
car's tank right before they tried to turn on the engine, and
prevented everything. He could have appeared in person to these kids
and gave them a stern lecture about their behavior.
But no. He waits until the damage is done, does nothing, then gets
the credit for any scrap of salvage that's perceived.
Get well soon Rev. Karl. I'm glad you can still post messages. You

Well, the "cave" ain't so bad. All my computers are here so I have
plenty to keep me busy.
The folks at the office however, they might be a different story. Doped
up and in pain, and that damn phone kept ringing with them wanting to
know if I was alright. Can't blame them really, good group of people to
work with.

I'm getting a little tired of being in a foxhole so often. I mean
hurricanes and north Atlantic storms are one thing. Morons behind the

How long are they keeping you immobile? I broke my foot in 1998 (only

I don't know how long I'll be down for now. I have a follow up

And when I can think straight again, I'll post about the fun night the
Quaker and I had, taking on a group of street preachers from "The
Potters House".
They didn't stand a chance. ;-)

And when I can think straight again, I'll post about the fun night the
Quaker and I had, taking on a group of street preachers from "The
Potters House".

They didn't stand a chance. ;-)

Oh my! Get better soon! :)
Seriously though, I'm glad you're okay - or at least no where near as bad as
you could have been. That's incredibly scary. Get better soon and remember
to indulge the wife a little and let her baby you a bit. It might be
annoying, but it'll make her feel better :)

Sorry for the long rant, just had to get this down.

No problem, I'm just glad you're okay. Yow.

How long are they keeping you immobile? I broke my foot in 1998 (only
broken bone I've ever had unless I count the tip of my right index finger
which went through a set of meshing gears and was therefore outnumbered
so I don't) and was stuck for about six weeks or so. And that was just a
minor break, though painful.

Hang in there. I expect you to take your ire out on the idiots that

The Quaker has been taking very good care of me. I've done my best to
be a "good patient" which is very unusual for me. I'm usually pretty
grumpy when I'm sick or down with the flu or something. But this is
different.
I'm being good to her because I'm very glad to be able to see her face
every day now.
The Celt is also taking good care of me. He's on spring break right
now, and getting him to leave me alone for any period of time is
impossible. Still, it's a great chance for me to help him with his
computer class, and we are getting caught up on some of our movie
watching together.

Take care of yourself and see a doctor. I use to think I could do
without the doctors and the flu would go away. This last bout with the
flu I was wrong. It held on for two months and I started vomiting and
also had diarrhea so badly that I was bleeding. One day I work up too
weak to stand and called my sister and her husband to take me to the
hospital. They took one look at me and called an ambulance. The lost
me but was able to revive me long enough to get me to ER where I
suffered respiratory failure and congestive heart failure (a major
heart attack). A that point I died and they had to jumpstart me. I
ended up in ICU on life support for 10 days after which I spent another
month in the hospital and then another month recovering in assisted
care. And I am left with a bill of well over $100,000 and not health
insurance.
I now take the flu very, very seriously although in my case diabetes was
very contributory to the situation. And that little flu also turned
into pneumonia.
Force fluids and eat whether you fill like it or not.

How adorable! The elder feline is feeling her age and seems to enjoy just
walking around and howling at anyone who will listen. The younger one is the
attention ***** and not above blocking your computer monitor, lying on the

your attention ;)

possible, my left leg however didn't get the memo.

Glad you are OK, as much as possible. I hope you have a speedy recovery.
And congratulations on those reflexes. It's not just the reflexes,
it's being able to act on what your body tells you.

Thanks. I'll post more when the "buzz" isn't there any longer.
