Thomas Paine and Intelligent Design |
Thomas Paine and Intelligent Design
http://www.alternet.org/story/28346/
By David Morris, AlterNet. Posted November 17, 2005.
In Paine's version of 'intelligent design,' science and religion are
inextricably linked; in the Kansas school board's definition, they are
adversaries.
The Kansas school board might find it instructive to read Thomas
Paine's 210-year-old argument in support of intelligent design. They
may be interested to learn how his belief in intelligent design led him
to reject organized religions.

Fortunately for all of us the other forefathers saw fit to add that the
government shouldn't be a institution that would shove religion down
someone's throat. So tell me what is you're real agenda when you
ask for intelligent design to be taught in the classroom. Philosophy is
not science. (btw I am a Bible believing Christian)

Paine was a Deist. He had no use for the Trinity any more than did Isaac
Newton.
It turns out that one can be a Deist and a rational human being at the
same time. It is harder to be a Christian and a rational human being
because one has to compartment his thought space.

Don't forget philosophers of the age of Enlightenment were Newtonians.
They subscribed to to the 'Clockwork Universe'.

Account for Newton invoking the deity in the general scholium to Book 3
of his -Principia-. This can be found on pp 939-944 of the Cohen
edition of -Principia-.
Newton was a God-Phreak. Fortunately it did not interfere with his physics.
