Moderate earthquake rocks Fukushima Prefecture
An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 5.0 shook northeastern Japan on
Wednesday, but there was no danger of tsunami, the meteorological
agency said.
The quake, which struck at 7:32 p.m., was centered about 80 kilometers
under the seabed off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, according to
the agency.
Moderate shaking was felt in Fukushima and neighboring Miyagi, the
agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
Japan, which sits atop four tectonic plates, is one of the world's
most earthquake-prone countries. (AP)

Even if Japan had had a huge earthquake, it would not qualify as

Question:
Have you ever been in an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale?
They're not "tiny" by any shred of the imagination; in fact, the word
"moderate" does not describe "tiny."
"Tiny" earthquakes are, by definition, called "micro-quakes," and those
happen every single day in every seismically active location around the
world; some in places like the state of Missouri, for example, where people
do not normally associate seismically-active faults within a given area.
Most people do not feel micro-quakes unless they are just below the surface
of the earth's upper crust.
In fact, most micro-quakes are deep within the lower part of the earth's
upper crust which is why they aren't felt.
A moderate quake such as a 5.0 has the capability to do some serious
rocking - one near the Santa Barbara area in the late 70s derailed a train
and injured passengers. I know, because I was in the mountains above that
quake and it felt like the ground turned into water - it was a serious
"rolling" type quake up there, whereas down below where it was stronger, it
gave three pretty violent shakes before dissipating.
I have lived in "earthquake" country most of my life; was born in California
and raised near several faultlines, the San Andreas being one of them. Now
that I live up north, we have many smaller faults and occasionally a 2 - 3
pointer will occur, which we *can* feel here, because of the fact that the
water table is so shallow.
Not that I agree at all with predictions that this so-called "prophet" has
made; I knew he was wrong the first time I read him.
God bless you,
Feather

That's probably a bit glib on my part...
As for my earthquake credential: Whittier, Northridge, Big Bear
(Ground Zero!) and a bunch of earthquakes growing up in Taiwan.

Yeah...especially considering the 6.0 that hit Iran just a half an hour or
so ago.

Excellent credentials. Been in many from 1964 - 1981 on the central and
southern coast of CA.....and later where I am, which doesn't see much *felt*
activity, but which does see a lot of micro seismic stuff. . .

I was an undergrad at UCLA in 1994. The winter quarter after
Northridge was... interesting. Everyone was on edge because at any
given point you would be hit with an aftershock.

Considering where he lives, yep. And considering I used to live not far up
the freeway from him, me too.

Lot of folks in LA don't even wake up when a 5 hits. Sleep right through
them. Like the Pasadena and Malibu quakes ('89 and '90). I don't even
remember those though I was there. Close to both (I may vaguely recall the
latter one now that I think about it).
Had to get to a 5.9 in the Whittier quake before it was something to
seriously remember. And Hector Mine. But that was a 7.1 (fortunately, way
the hell outside of the city but it was *quite a ride).
I managed to miss the Northridge quake. Not that I'm complaining of course...

Hey, COOLNESSS......
My mother works there. . .loves that little burg Solvang.. .Pea Soup
Andersen's in Buellton is sure fun....and of course, being a bird freak, I
love the Ostrich farm along the highway between Lompoc and Buellton.
.....tell me something....there's supposedly a relatively new man-made lake
(OTHER than Cachuma) which is in the area called "Pyramid". Now, I left that
area permanently and have only visited there since leaving, even though my
mother still lives down there. .. (I was last there in 1996) - the ONLY
Pyramid Lake I remember was in Nevada, where I used to go collect rocks. .
..is there really a lake called Pyramid somewhere near there? Perhaps close
to Ojai?

Yeah, I moved to northern California 20 years ago. . FROM northern
Nevada....and before that, was on the Central coast of California
for most of my life (born at Vandenberg)
I'm heading out that way (again) on Sunday, weather permitting.
http://home.comcast.net/~vickman/trip7.htm
Hey, COOLNESSS......
My mother works there. . .loves that little burg Solvang.. .Pea Soup
Andersen's in Buellton is sure fun....and of course, being a bird
freak, I love the Ostrich farm along the highway between Lompoc and
Buellton.
....tell me something....there's supposedly a relatively new man-made
lake (OTHER than Cachuma) which is in the area called "Pyramid". Now,
I left that area permanently and have only visited there since
leaving, even though my mother still lives down there. .. (I was last
there in 1996) - the ONLY Pyramid Lake I remember was in Nevada, where

Feather
It's a man-made reservoir named for a prominent rock formation that looks
like a pyramid. In 1973, Caltrans built Interstate 5, the 4-lane
superhighway that cuts through the Tehachapi mountains north of Los
Angeles. It replaced Highway 99, which replaced the old Ridge Route in
the 1930s. Old Highway 99 now lies at the bottom of Pyramid Lake, and
rises like a Phoenix out of the north shoreline - which I believe is now
used as a boat launch. It's a long way from Ojai. It's closer to
Gorman, and Frazier Park.
Here's a little history on the area.

felt miles away in Maitland.

Have you ever been in an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter Scale?
They're not "tiny" by any shred of the imagination; in fact, the word
"moderate" does not describe "tiny."
I live in Southern California. Unless you're right on top of the
epicenter of a 5.0, it's barely enough to cause a few people to stop what
they're doing and mutter, "what was that?" If you ask 100 people if they
felt the earthquake, 75 will say no. Keep in mind, Northridge was a 6.8.
6.0 is 100 times worse than a 5.0. 6.8 would be about 8,000 times worse
than that 5.0.

You're right on one count, wrong on another.
5 pointers are strong, not necessarily right at the epicenter, either, as it
depends a lot on the depth of the quake.
Shallow 5 pointers are sharper. ..

(AP)

But you can't predict an earthquake can you.
Can you?
I can:
Forecast:
transitive senses
1 a : to calculate or predict (some future event or condition) usually
as a result of study and analysis of available pertinent data;
especially : to predict (weather conditions) on the basis of
correlated meteorological observations b : to indicate as likely to
occur (Brittannica)
Thus a japanese seismologist could predict an earthquake for any
given day in Japan and state the likely magnitude based on data for
previous earthquakes. Based on my knowledge of earthquakes
I think I can predict with a considerable degree of accuracy that
there will not be a noticeable earthquake where I am now before the
end of the month. I can say with confidence that the worst that
could happen would be a minor tremor that very few people will
notice. These occur roughly one per year. I say this even
knowing that there is a major fault line (The Craven fault) not far
north of here and an even bigger one (The Great Glen Fault) in
Scotland.
I can predict with absolute certainty that there will not be
a volcanic eruption in the British Isles before the end of the
month, even though there are several dormant vocanos here,
one of which was very active at one time (the one overlooking
Edinburgh once produced larva flows as far south as the line
of Hadrian's Wall between Newcastle and Carlisle)
I can also predict there will be no Hurricanes here in Yorkshire
but maybe a gale or two by the end of the month.
I can also predict with absolute certainty that there will not
be a Tsunami over the beaches on the Holderness Coast
this year. There is however a remote possiblity that one
might strike the West Coast of Ireland as well as the Eastern
Coast of North America.
