To the Theists |
I finished watching an episode of 'Cosmos' a short while ago on the 'Science
Channel'. This particular episode was titled, 'The Backbone of Night'. It
dealt with the 'split' between religion & mysticism and science. Cosmos
should be required viewing for all the theists that come into this NG asking
silly questions about the universe and 'microbes'. We wouldn't have to
explain, say, where the earth came from if some theists just immersed
themselves in at least a *little* science. (But, then again, it's quite
apparent that a lot of you theists haven't bothered to immerse yourselves
all that deeply in your bible either, have you?)
The program also helped to remind me what a great man Carl Sagan was.

I had to pay my *first* half of the property taxes a while back. That, and
other expenses caused me to loose my satellite TV for a while. (It's dang
expensive. But I *have* to pay for satellite TV. Trying to use an antenna
out here is useless. For me, having satellite TV is *not* a luxury but a
necessity, as far as I am concerned. Believe me. Having no TV out here is
not very pleasant. The only newspaper I get is the Peshtigo Times. That was
the 'Peshtigo', not 'New York' Times. Quite a difference.
If only more of the fundies would watch something like the Science Channel,
they wouldn't post some of the ridiculous stuff they post. But then again,
they can't stand the truth. So I can see and understand the aversion to
science-related programming.
Oh. One of the *good* things about being held 'captive' out here is that I
don't have the opportunity to 'fritter' away what little money I have, much.
And I must say: being relatively debt-free *does* help in the morale
department.

Cosmos is supurb. It is simply beautiful to the point of drawing tears
from the viewer. I don't get digital cable so I can't watch the Science
Channel. I was able to catch episode two a few months back on basic
cable. I havn't seen the whole thing since I was in college and was
able to see the video tapes in the library. I seriously need to get the
DVDs.
One of my favorite video clips of all time remains his description of
the history of the universe from the big bang to the emergence of man
("eyes evolved, and now the cosmos could see" the man was a poet) from
episode 13: Who Speaks For Earth. Just after he talks about Hypatia and
the fall of the Library of Alexandria.

Soul of a poet,
Mind of a scientist,

You got *that* right. One of the moving sections of the episode was his
inter-action with young children. You could just *feel* the sheer joy he got
out of expanding the minds of our youth; in just plain 'teaching'. (And you
could just see the 'wonder' and amazement in their eyes, too. What a
contrast to the mindless indoctrination the 'other' side subjects the
precious minds of our young to. Nauseating, really.)

They are beholden to their religious superiors and will not even
approach your suggestion.
We must find a way to help them.
We must vote for regime change right now through 2008, and maybe even
further.
BTW, are cameras allowed at voting locations? Of course not in the
booth, but in the area where people check in .
I have a premonition that voter disenfranchising will again occur,
more so than last time. Videos taken by voters at the polls should be
available. And, people tend to toe the line when in front of a camera.
The only reason to block cameras is if there's fraud.
Note to Neocons: if you have nothing to hide you would welcome
cameras. Same ***** you pull on us with eavesdropping and phone
logging, to name only two abuses. And don't flood the media with
successful vote stories in your territory so as to upstage any fraud
in our territory.
We're watching, and cameras are cheap.
