Key Vote on Abortion in House - Your Call Can Decide the Outcome
Tomorrow, the powerful House Appropriations Committee will consider a
spending bill for foreign aid that will include a debate over abortion. Rep.
Nita Lowey (D-NY) will introduce an amendment that would give federal money
to the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA), an organization that supports China's
one-child policy and indirectly funds coerced abortions. President Bush has
firmly opposed any support for UNFPA but the House Appropriations Committee
is evenly split between pro-life and pro-abortion Members so the fight over
this amendment will be decided by one or two votes either way.
FRC has identified eight key votes on this committee. If you are from one of
these states call the Capitol switchboard, 202-224-3121, and ask them for
the Member's office and express your opposition to the Lowey amendment to
fund UNFPA. The U.S government should not be in the business of funding any
abortions, much less forced abortions. Key votes: Ralph Regula (R-OH), Jerry
Lewis (R-CA), David Hobson (R-OH), George Nethercutt (R-WA), Duke Cunningham
(R-CA), Kay Granger (R-TX), John Sweeney (R-NY), Bud Cramer (D-AL).

Battle for Marriage Taking Place in State Courts Nationwide
The case for why we need a Constitutional amendment to protect marriage gets
stronger every day as more left-wing groups ignore the will of the people
and push to have courts redefine marriage. It happened again just yesterday
as the American Civil Liberties Union sued the city of Baltimore and four
Maryland counties to grant same-sex couples the ability to marry. Maryland
does not have a state Defense of Marriage Act but it does have a statutory
law which specifically says that marriage in Maryland is between one man and
one woman. The law also prohibits Maryland from recognizing another state's
same-sex "marriage" licenses. Not surprisingly, the ACLU is up to similar
tricks in other states around the country.
Thankfully, the conservative version of the ACLU, the Alliance Defense Fund,
is standing in the gap. Just this week, FRC along with ADF filed another
amicus brief in a state high court in support of marriage, this time in the
Supreme Court of New Mexico. The case, Dunlap v. Madrid involves a challenge
to the state marriage law by Victoria Dunlap, Clerk of Sandoval County. As
you may recall, Dunlap began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples
earlier this year without any authority and, quite notably, in opposition to
New Mexico's own state marriage law. A trial court issued a Temporary
Restraining Order against her causing her to stop her unlawful actions and
that restraining order was extended by the state's Supreme Court. However,
like the ACLU, Dunlap does not seem to get the message, she refuses to
follow the law and is continuing to press her case. But rest assured, FRC
and ADF will do the same.
Making the Case for Marriage on Capitol Hill and Beyond
I along with several members of FRC's Government Affairs team have spent
every day on Capitol Hill this week in meetings with a number of U.S.
Senators and key staffers to make the case for a marriage protection
amendment before next week's crucial vote. Tomorrow we're holding a joint
press conference with other pro-family organizations and Senators Sam
Brownback (R-KS) and Wayne Allard (R-CO) to deliver over one million
petitions in support of traditional marriage to Senate offices. And finally,
I want to again encourage you to take part in our Battle for Marriage
simulcast this Sunday evening July 11th. To sign up via TV, radio or
webcast, click on the link provided below or call (800) 225-4008.
