PERHAPS THE most painful reminder for the Japanese of their long
struggle to climb out of the economic doldrums has been the leaps and
bounds made by their vast neighbour, China.
Like the world's other rich countries, Japan has had to come to terms
with the emergence of China as a major economic power, bringing
millions of low-cost workers into the global labour force, pushing up
the price of raw materials and flooding the world's markets with cheap
goods.
