Tom's religious spin and other noise |
It was very interesting watching Tom Cruise on "Dateline" last night.
Katie Korick was interviewing him about his movie "The Last Samurai".
He was going on and on about honor, the movie, bushido and such, Nicole
and how he want's nothing but happiness for her, blah, blah, blah, ad
nauseium.
Then, naturally, getting into all the psycobable, "have you found your
center, your peace" crap, top gun Tom mentions Scientology. His
favorite hobby horse.
Of course, everyone knew the interview would take that turn. In fact,
it was naturally all planed. What was really interesting was his
response when asked how he felt when people criticized his religion.
He called it bigoted. Said that those of us that question, and
criticize Scientology are bigots, and that it really upset him. Of
course I really don't care that it upsets him, but I found his reaction
interesting none the less.
As atheists, we are familiar with being called names for our lack of
faith in gods. It is very common for us to field comments from the
faithful that are less than kind. And for what? Asking that before we
believe as the faithful do, for proof of what they believe in? For
asking why we need to believe as they do?
Yet, here is this Hollywood big shot, laying a name onto those that
question and criticize his religion, usually reserved for those that
support and spread hate. And like many religions, cults, and groups,
the most basic method of causing doubt is left out.
We see reports of the abuses of groups like Scientology, The Branch
Davidians, Jonestown, the Catholic Church, the JW's and so forth. Yet
no one puts them on the spot and demands proof of their most basic tenants.
I ask for proof from xtians that Jesus was a real human being, they
provide nothing. I ask from muslims that they provide evidence of
allah, they provide nothing. I ask jews for evidence of Moses, they
provide nothing.
Now I ask Scientologists for evidence of ingrams and their alien bozos.
I can pretty well bet, they will provide nothing.
They all talk a good talk, and love to shift the burden of proof. But
when it comes right down to it, getting them to provide evidence that
would cause me to reflect on my lack of faith, they fail, every time.
In other noise, the xtian I carpool with to work was attempting this
week to debate the Roy Moore case. This is the same person that only
found out about the Patriot Act, 2 months ago, and was shocked by it.
So needless to say, he had a pretty classic, fundy view of Roy boy and
his getting fired. However when I stated that the judge was removed not
for his belief, but for setting himself up above the law, may xtian
partner basically clamed up. He was admitting, without saying so, that
I was right, and that RoyBoy, was wrong.
Now that felt good.

Especially since L. Ron Hubbard basically told everybody that he intended to
start a religion to make some money.

True, in that respect he was a bit more honest then Joseph Smith was.
To bad he was such a poor writer. If he'd created the religion with a
whole lot less science fiction, and more mythology, it might be a bit
more respected today.
Then again, do they deserve any more respect after the crap they have
pulled?
This is also a good object lesson for the rabid fundy, pushy muslim,
loud jew, happy hindu, and any others that push their religion on to
people. If they claim that it takes thousands of years for a religion
to happen and evolve, tell them to explain the mormons, jw's, and
Hubbards group. One is just over 100 years, the other 2 are still under
100 years. Hubbards clap trap being the newest. And the jw's, fast
approaching 100.
To bad there still is nothing new under the sun.

But THEIR religion is the TRUE one.

That sounds interesting. When/where did he say that?

The way I heard it, it was originally started on a bet.
