Bush Spokesman Retracts Stem Cell Comment
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
WASHINGTON, July 24 President Bush does not equate embryonic stem cell
research with murder, the White House press secretary, Tony Snow, said
on Monday as he apologized for his earlier assertion that Mr. Bush held
that view.
He would not use that term, Mr. Snow told reporters, adding, The
president has said that he believes that this is the destruction of
human life.
At issue was a comment Mr. Snow made last Tuesday on Mr. Bushs decision
to veto legislation to expand federally supported studies on stem cells.
The president believes strongly that for the purpose of research its
inappropriate for the federal government to finance something that many
people consider murder, Mr. Snow said last Tuesday. Hes one of them. The
simple answer is he thinks murder is wrong.
The remark created a storm on Capitol Hill, where supporters of stem
cell research argued that if Mr. Bush believed destroying embryos was
murder, he should prosecute fertility clinics.
On Sunday, Mr. Bushs chief of staff, Joshua B. Bolten, struggled to
explain the characterization on NBCs Meet the Press.
Its a very complicated, very, very delicate issue, Mr. Bolten said.
Mr. Snow said Monday that he was sorry to have created a little trouble
for Josh Bolten, and added, I will go ahead and apologize for having
overstated, I guess, overstated the presidents position.

Talking out of both sides of their mouths will not
do the Repugs a bit of good. It's already caught
up with them. They are in a lot of trouble. They're
losing big chunks of their base, lots of disgruntled
fundies, the moderates have turned on them (finally)
and so have many Libertarians. And, many Democrats
who went along with them out of fear of reprisal from
Tom Delay no longer are. I can't wait for Novermber.
They think that getting us involved in another war and
using the swiftboat liars is going to help them. Well,
guess again.

Um... so I wonder what Snow and the Chief Chimp would say is the
difference between "murder" and "the destruction of human life"? If
you're going to have an extreme, unreasoning position, you really ought
to at least try to be honest and open about it.

It's not complicated at all. Mr. Bush is a blithering idiot, completely
at ease with holding several mutually contradictory beliefs, and willing
to lie to anyone about anything to advance his political agenda, at the
expense of the welfare of the country he supposedly leads. It will take
America years, perhaps decades, to recover the dignity and prestige that
he has squandered, not to mention the fiscal calamity he has wrought.
How much would you pay to hear Mr. Bolton say that?

How is "the destruction of human life" different from murder?
Funny how they don't want to own their own positions...
