Object: Too busy hating to care: Christian Coalition's New Leader Steps Down
I wanted to check out the CC's own web site (http://www.cc.org/) to get
it's own spin- er, side of the story, but the site was down (??). Hard
to imagine they can get past the notion that the new ex-leader of the CC
was "encouraged to leave" because he was trying to push an agenda of
caring for the less fortunate and for the environment.
It's no wonder the CC has less weight to throw around in the corridors
of power, even as they try to keep politically relevant by pounding on
the two sour notes of two guys kissing and abortion.
Mind you, I would no doubt have issues with this guy. But it would have
been a good sign if the CC had seen value in a voice like Hunter's. I
guess complicating the mission statement by humanizing it is too much of
a stretch for the CC.

Christian Coalition's New Leader Steps Down
by Rachel Martin
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6550598
All Things Considered, November 28, 2006 · Rev. Joel Hunter,
president-elect of the Christian Coalition of America, is declining the
job, saying the organization wouldn't let him expand its agenda beyond
opposing abortion and gay marriage. A statement issued by the group said
Hunter left because of "differences in philosophy and vision."
Hunter said he was not asked to leave. But, he says, he had wanted to
focus on issues such as poverty and the environment.
---------
A review of Hunter's book, 'Right Wing Wrong Bird'
http://www.rightwingwrongbird.com/test_3/index.html
An endorsement from Dr. Clive Calver, Sr. Pastor of Walnut Hill
Community Church, Former President of World Relief: ³One day across the
Atlantic, a senior British Government Minister said to me, ŒClive, I
just donıt understand you evangelicals. One minute youıre in here
talking to me about social issues, affecting personal morality and
family values, the next minute youıre in speaking to matters of social
concern like unemployment, environment or poverty. Tell me, what ARE you
evangelicals? Are you left wing or are you right wing?ı The answer I
gave him was that we are neither; we donıt naturally fit into political
categories. We donıt follow a single political ideology, but another
King: Jesus. It is that attitude that runs throughout Joel Hunterıs
book. He writes clearly and patiently about the need to disenfranchise
ourselves from entanglement from the worldıs politics and embrace an
understanding from Scripture of what our Lord would have us to say and
do with each individual issue. This book is long overdue Š I only wish I
had written it.²

Don't you love it? The CHRISTIAN Coalition's agenda has no room for caring
for the poor...

The irony? Sure, and it goes further. If the CC and like organizations
actually brushed up on their Jesus, the world would likely be a better
place, their membership would expand, and their influence would grow.

I doubt that. Being good is boring. It's not nearly so exciting as trying
to take over a government and oppress people...

The Christian Coalition was set up to get fundamentalists into power,
and took over the Republican party from the grass roots upwards. In
many cases illegally. For example with Christian central telling the
preachers what the sermon should be about, and the distribution of
"non-partisan" voter "guides" telling them who voted which way on the
issue preached.
It has never been about care and compassion.

Then it makes perfect sense that a guy trying to do good would be a bad
fit for the organization.
A revealing turn of events.
