"Touching the Void" on DVD now |
Some time ago there was a thread about the movie which told of an
atheist mountain climber's fight for survival when trapped on a
mountain high in the Andes. I rented and watched it last night and I
would highly recommend it.

I just saw it a few days ago and it was awesome. I had no idea about the
atheist angle when I rented it and then the subject of praying for help out
of his situation (horrifying, to say the least) was brought up. I thought
to myself, "Aw, here it comes. The touching moment when he begs a make
believe God for help." but it didn't happen that way at all. I was quite
surprised to say the least. The host didn't come back later and weasel some
religion in or anything. It was refreshing to see such honesty.

I could still guess the reaction of a fundy on seeing the same movie.
"It was a miracle! Gawd saved him for something else!" Sure.

I liked that movie a lot.
Reenacted episodes with actors alternate with interviews of the
real-life mountaineers. In one of these interviews, the man who had
the worst experience says (quoting from memory): "I don't believe in
God but I always wondered if, faced with a life threatening situation,
I would revert to prayer. But actually, when I went through all this,
I was focused on survival and religion didn't cross my mind at all,
not even one bit. I guess that means I'm really not a believer !"
Later on, he examines rationally the episodes where, badly dehydrated
and wounded, he hallucinates voices. I guess a theist would have
interpreted that as the voice of angels!
Highly recommended.

A fundy would probably have died praying for a miracle instead of
saving himself.
Highly recommended.

Ooops! From the title I thought it was a film about sticking your
finger in a fundie's ear.

No, That would be a sci fi thriller about exploring a black hole.
